The Clear Lake Fire Department responded to two separate incidents Friday evening, starting with a reported kitchen fire at The Other Place on Highway 18 shortly before 5 p.m.

Lavon Hain

 

     Lavon Irene Hain, 88, Mason City, Iowa, died Thursday, Jan. 24, 2013 at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.  

     A Funeral Service was held Monday, Jan. 28, 2013 at the Immanuel Reformed United Church of Christ, Klemme, Iowa, with Rev. Donna Buckman officiating.  Interment was at Ell Township Cemetery, Klemme.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Lavon Hain’s family.  

Donald Simpson

 

Donald L. Simpson, 60, of Long Beach, Calif., formerly of Wesley, Iowa, died Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2013, of complications from a stroke, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Long Beach.

Don was born Oct. 24, 1952 in Algona, Iowa, to E. Louis and E. Ruth (Seaberg) Simpson of Wesley.  Don graduated from Corwith Wesley High School  in 1970 and attended Iowa State University.

CL girls stand at 11-3 in conference play

 

The Clear Lake girls set up their important game with St. Ed’s with victories over Clarion-Goldfield and Eagle Grove, but a slow start prevented the Lions from upsetting the conference leader.  The Lions are now 12-4 overall and 11-3 in the North Central Conference.  With their win, St. Ed’s earned some breathing room at the top of leader board.  The 

A week of ups and downs for Cardinals

 

The Garner-Hayfield/Ventura boys basketball team had a week of ups and downs. The Cards picked up two wins, but dropped a disappointing game to North Iowa.  Their record now stands at 13-4.

G-H/V 60, Osage 50

Lions working hard

 

The Clear Lake boys pushed their record to 11-4 with a pair of wins last week.  The week also included a loss on the road to Fort Dodge St Ed’s.  The Lions now share a 10-4 mark in the North Central Conference with the Gaels.  Iowa Falls-Alden continues to lead the way at 12-2, followed by Humboldt at 11-3.

 

Win streak continues for G-H/V girls

 

The Garner-Hayfield Ventura girls stretched their winning steak to five with three more wins last week, moving their record to 11-6.

G-H/V 39, Osage 34

The G-H/V girls learned that playing hard all 32 minutes of a game leads to victories.  

Wrestlers wrap up regular season with close win over Algona

 

The Clear Lake wrestling team finished its regular season Thursday night with a 36-33 win over Algona.  The victory lifted the Lions’ record to 5-3 in the North Central Conference and 15-15 over all. 

“That is a very good regular season with the schedule we wrestled,” said Coach Gary Weber.  “This team beat ranked teams in, Emmetsburg, Osage, Denver-Tripoli and Fort Dodge St.Edmonds.  We 

upped the strength of our schedule and our staff believes it will pay dividends at Sectionals.”

Officials rescue teen from car going through lake ice

 

Emergency crews rescued a Clear Lake teen Thursday night after the vehicle he was driving partially went through the ice while driving on the lake.
