A 1994 Chevrolet pickup has been recovered after breaking through the ice on Clear Lake during the early morning hours Tuesday, Feb. 26.

 

Fire department invites interested volunteers

Lake School Board ponders tax rate options while awaiting State funding decision

 

The Clear Lake School Board reviewed options for its 2013-14 budget Monday, but has delayed making any tax rate decisions until the state finalizes its allowable growth rate provided to schools.

Lorna Leerar, business manager for the School District, prepared tax levy information based upon zero, 2 and 4 percent allowable growth.  Leerar said she has no idea how soon the State Legislature will make a decision 

regarding allowable growth, but is generally expected to land between 2 and 4 percent.  

Mary Eason

 

Mary Louise (Huff) Eason was born March 4, 1930 at home in rural Greenfield, Iowa, to parents Rosa Ada Enid (Lundy) and William Isaac Huff.  She died peacefully Feb. 11, 2013 at home in Ankeny, Iowa, with her husband of 60 years, John Verne Eason, steadfastly by her side until the end, age 82 years and 345 days.

Mary grew up on the family farm with her older sister,  Violet (Vi), and brother, William (Bill), who preceded her in death, and her younger sister, Delores.  She attended country school, one room, through

Lee Weston Hughes, 77, of Clear Lake, died Sunday, Feb. 17, 2013 at the Good Shepherd Health Center, Mason City, Iowa.

Wrestlers prove ability at State Meet

 

 

Clear Lake took a small, but mighty contingent to the State Wrestling Tournament and emerged with big results.  With just four wrestlers, the Lions placed eighth out of 96 Class 2A schools at the 2013 State Wrestling tournament.   Three of Clear Lake’s wrestlers earned their way to the placewinners’ platform Saturday night.

Fueled by a hustle play from junior Pete Swenson, the Clear Lake boys secured a win over Gilbert Monday night and advanced in post-season tournament play.

Late in the game Swenson dove to make a steal and tipped the ball to teammate Spencer Davidson, who drove the floor and laid the ball in the basket, giving the Lions a 

Girls drop a heartbreaker

 

Time wasn’t on Clear Lake’s side Saturday.

“We just ran out of time,” said Clear Lake Coach Bart Smith after his team fell, 40-39, to Charles City in the Class 4A Regional played in Clear Lake.  “Both teams competed and played tough defense the whole night and we just needed one more bucket to fall for us to win.”

Cardinals fall to Forest City in second round of Class 2A action

 

 

The entire game was an uphill battle for the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura boys basketball team when they faced Forest City on Thursday, Feb. 14, in the second round of the Class 2A District Basketball Tournament.  The Cardinals had a bye in the first round.

“We knew we had our hands full playing Forest City,” said Coach Joe Albertson.  “They have a number of consistent shooters from deep and a couple of active posts.”
