Voter registration deadline is Friday

Friday, Oct. 28, is the final day to pre-register to vote in the Nov. 8, Regular City Election.
     The office of the Cerro Gordo County Auditor will be open an extra half hour – until 5 p.m. – on that date for eligible electors who wish to register in person.  Completed voter registrations may be mailed to the county auditor, but must be either received by the above deadline or postmarked on/before Monday, Oct. 24 in order to be valid for the Nov. 8 Regular City Election.

    The Federal Communications Commission is scheduled to meet Oct. 27 to act on the new rules, which will significantly impact rural Iowans.  Local telephone and Internet providers fear the new rules will hurt their ability to serve rural areas by redirecting their funding, which could lead to sharp price increases, degraded service and a larger digital divide.

Irene Waddingham

    Irene E. Waddingham, age 89, died Tuesday, Oct. 11, 2011 at Concord Care Center in Garner, Iowa. Funeral services were held Friday, Oct. 14, at Immanuel Reformed United Church of Christ in Klemme, Iowa with the Rev. Donna Buckman. Burial was at Ell Township Cemetery in Klemme. Memorials may be directed to Hospice of North Iowa, or the donor’s choice.

Clear Lake girls finish as runner-up in NCC Cross Country meet; boys finish in sixth place

    The Clear Lake girls cross country team recorded its highest placement since 1987 at the conference, finishing as NCC runner-up Tuesday, Oct. 11.  The meet was held at the Baptist Camp at Ventura.  The Clear Lake boys also ran well, finishing sixth overall among NCC competitors.

Number one Lions pound the Bulldogs, 54-0

    The Clear Lake Lions looked like the number one ranked team that they are, as they pounded Hampton-Dumont 54-0 Friday night at Lions Field.  The win clinched the District 3 title for the Lions (8-0, 6-0) and provided their 32nd straight district victory.

It was a week of highs and lows for the Ventura volleyball team, picking up one win and one loss.

Vikings drop hard-fought battle

It was a hard hitting, hard played game on Friday night, when the Ventura Vikings traveled to Clarksville to take on the eighth ranked Indians in District 3 action.  The Vikings gave the Indians a run for their money, leading the game by one point with 1:40 remaining in the game, but one last touchdown in the final minute of play gave Clarksville the 49-42 victory.
    Ventura got on the board first with a four-yard run to the end zone by Joel Watson.  Watson also ran in the two-point conversion for an 8-0 first quarter lead.

Three Stars remembered at park

   The families of Ritchie Valens and J. P. “The Big Bopper” Richardson were in Clear Lake last week to attend the dedication of a new park just west of the Surf Ballroom which honors the memory of their loves ones, along with rock and roll icon Buddy Holly.
