Clear Lake students accept Rachel’s Challenge

    It isn’t always the lessons that are tough on kids at school.  It’s the kids.
    Bullying has made its way from the school yards into the schools and even cyberspace, say school leaders.
    Cathy Spotts, guidance counselor at Clear Lake High School, said bullying has become one of the biggest challenges facing schools today. 
    Enter Rachel’s Challenge.   

Douglas Mostrom

     Douglas Alan Mostrom, 49, 2115 1st Ave S., Clear Lake, died Saturday, Oct. 1, 2011 at his home.  A funeral service will be held 11 a.m., Friday, Oct. 7, at Zion Lutheran Church, 112 N. 4th St., Clear Lake, with the Rev. Derik Yarian officiating.  Visitation will be Thursday, from 5 – 7 p.m. at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. 4th St., and one hour prior to the service at the church.  Interment will be at Elk Creek Cemetery, Kensett, Iowa.  Memorials may be given to the Douglas A. Mostrom Memorial Fund.

Loren Sadler

    Loren “Swede” J. Sadler, 77, 1500 South Shore Dr., Lot 52, Clear Lake, died Thursday, Sept. 29, 2011 at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.     A memorial service was held Tuesday, Oct. 4, at the Clear Lake United Methodist Church, Clear Lake, with the Rev. Diana Hoover officiating.  Inurnment was at Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.  Military honors were provided by the Clear Lake V.F.W.  Memorials may be given to Loren J. Sadler Memorial Fund.

Jane Bredlow

    Jane Pauline Bredlow of Clear Lake passed away Monday, Sept. 26, 2011, at the age of 76. At her request, no memorial service is planned. Memorials can be sent to Hospice of North Iowa.
    She was born on June 19, 1935, in Alhambra, Calif. to Robert Hauert Blair and Julia Twanet (Cherry) Blair. She had one older sister, Mary Joe (Blair) Still Goodhue. She

Arlene Laughlin

    Arlene J. “Jake” Laughlin, 86, of West Des Moines, Iowa died in a tragic car accident on Sept. 20, 2011. She was born in Clear Lake on June 25, 1925, to Henry Jacobson and Vernetta Hanson Jacobson.
    A Funeral Mass was held Saturday, Sept. 24, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with burial at Glendale Cemetery. Dr. Donald Lomen

    Dr. Donald O. Lomen, 84, Clear Lake, died peacefully Thursday, Sept. 29, 2011 at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit after a brief battle with Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma surrounded by his family.   A funeral service was held Monday, Oct. 3, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Mason City with the Rev. Lions hitting on all cylinders

    The Clear Lake Lions seem to be hitting on all cylinders -- and that’s important heading into arguably one of the biggest regular season games ever to be played at Lions Field.

Vikings keep scoring train rolling; down CAL, 74-32

    One thing can be said for the Ventura Vikings - they sure know how to score.  So far this season, the Vikings have amassed 253 points.  Friday night’s game against CAL was no exception to the scoring frenzy, as Ventura topped the Cadets, 74-32.
    Ventura was a scoring machine in the first quarter, collecting four touchdowns. 
    Schmitz opened the scoring with a 31-yard run, followed by a completed seven-yard pass to Shawn Murphy.  Both PAT attempts were blocked for a 12-0 lead.  Joel Watson

G-H/V/WH cross country teams have impressive week

The Garner-Hayfield/Ventura/West Hancock cross country teams put in another impressive week.  Both the girls and boys brought home top finishes in their home meet held Monday, Sept. 26, and a met at Hampton-Dumont on Thursday, Sept. 29.

    The girl’s team placed first and the boys captured second place at their home meet.  The girls finished with 20 points, ahead of North Iowa with 67 and Central Springs with 81.  The boys finished with 61 points, behind Osage with 43 points.  Seven teams competed in the meet.

Lady Vikes go 1-2 in recent volleyball action

    The Ventura volleyball team dropped two games and picked up one win in recent volleyball action.

    The Lady Vikes traveled to Swea City on Tuesday, Sept. 27, to play NSKAR.  Ventura lost in three matches, 26-24, 25-15 and 25-8.
