Fire causes substantial damage to home

An estimated $40,000 damage was caused in a house fire Wednesday afternoon in Clear Lake.

Firefighters responded to 1509 N. 24th St. at 1:57 p.m. and upon arrival found a single story home with light smoke showing from an open overhead garage door and heavy fire showing in a kitchen.

Former legislator Gary Blodgett dead at 83

Dr. Gary B. Blodgett, longtime Mason City orthodontist and state legislator, died May 19, 2021.  His 50-year professional and political career  included service in the Bush  administration in Washington, D.C.  and numerous North Iowa Republican causes and campaigns.

One year ago Lydia Futrell was standing before the 2020 Clear Lake High School graduating class joking about the “worst senior year ever,” but she was optimistic all of that was about to change.   “I believe that we are going to go out and make the future that we envisioned a reality,” she declared.

Two applicants to city’s business incubator program receive approval

(Above) Chris Andersen launched his business, Chris’ Kettle Korn, two years ago at the Clear Lake Farmers Market.  Andersen was introduced Monday as one of the first participants in the city’s new business incubator program.  He will soon open a downtown location.  Andersen continues to support the Farmers Market, which opened for the season on Saturday in the Surf Ballroom parking lot.
