Olympic dreams are real for local runners

A pair of local runners who each captured state titles in high school and success in the collegiate ranks will test their talents in the 2020 Olympic trials for marathon runners in Atlanta, Ga., in February.

“Qualifying for an Olympic Trials has been something I have always dreamed about. Even before I fully could comprehend what that fully meant, I knew I wanted to be in a position to compete with some of the best athletes in the country on the same stage,” said Alana (Enabnit) Scarano.

(Above) Hunting helpers in 1969 - Donald Leonard, of Clear Lake, had plenty of assistances while hunting the Ventura Marsh in 1969.  His sons, Scott, Mark and Jeff and dog, “Sari,” were on the lookout for ducks while Dad set his sights.  Hunters were reminded that the duck season ended on Nov. 23.  The goose season ran through Dec. 12.

(Above) Ventura playground gets donation in 1994Linda Hale (left) represented the Ventura Playground Group in 1994.  She was pleased to receive a $100 donation to the playground equipment drive from Ventura Education Association President Lorie Huffman and VEW members Polly Suntken, Patsy Stuffy, Nate Benzing, Judy Whitte, Michele Penning, Charlie Schroeder and Carolyn Luscomb.  The group raised money for new playground equipment at Ventura School.

William E. Austin

William “Bill” E. Austin, 79, of Clear Lake passed away Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2019, at the Mercy One North Iowa Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

A funeral service was held on Wednesday, Nov. 13, at Seventh-day Adventist Church, 815 North Kentucky Avenue, Mason City, with Pastor Mark Luckiesh officiating.  Inurnment will be held in the Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City, at a later date.

William E. Austin

William “Bill” E. Austin, 79, of Clear Lake passed away Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2019, at the Mercy One North Iowa Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Darlene P. Bergquist

Darlene Patricia Bergquist, 68, passed away on Oct. 20, 2019, in Des Moines. A private gathering was held for immediate family on Tuesday, Oct. 22, 2019. Per her wishes, she has been cremated.
