Colby sworn in as new police department captain

(Above) After taking the oath of office from Mayor Nelson Crabb Monday night, Michael Colby’s wife, Jennifer, pinned his badge on his new uniform.  Colby, who previously served with the Clive Police Department, is the new captain on the CLPD.

Michael Colby spent his first day on the job as Captain of the Clear Lake Police Department Monday.  Colby’s day was capped by taking the oath of office and having his wife pin his badge at the City Council meeting.

Accidental shooting claims life of Lake 10-year-old

Tragedy struck when a 10-year-old Clear Lake boy died as the result of an accidental discharge of a pellet gun during an outing Sunday afternoon, Aug. 14.

The incident happened at a shooting range in Garner, Iowa.

Authorities report Cade Hartwig, son of Tom and Heather Hartwig,  was with relatives at a shooting range designated for law enforcement when he was unintentionally struck by a pellet gun.

Brick paver sidewalk project moves ahead despite criticism

The Clear Lake City Council voted to proceed with its Main Street sidewalk replacement project, despite hearing complaints from those opposed to continuing to use brick pavers.  All those objecting to the plan said they recognized the need for the project, but favored either concrete walkways trimmed with brick pavers, or different pavers which would result in a more flat finish.

The Clear Lake Lions football team has been working hard in practice as they prepare for the 2016 season.  (Above) Head Coach Jared DeVries works with the lineman during a recent practice. The Lions open the season this Friday night as they travel to Mason City.  The 9th grade team takes the field at 4:45 p.m., followed by the Varsity at 7:30 p.m.  This Friday is Black Out Night and all fans are asked to dress

Audrey J. Haag

Audrey Jean Haag, 46, of Clear Lake, died Tuesday, Aug. 16, 2016 at her home.

Private memorial service will be held at a later time.  Memorials in care of Audrey may be mailed to Sarah Nelson, 3558 140th St., Thornton, Iowa 50479.

Audrey was born Dec. 10, 1969, in Minneapolis, Minn., the daughter of Clifford and Lois (Paine) Stykel.

She graduated from Clear Lake High School in 1989.  She worked various jobs in the Clear Lake area.

Cade Thomas Hartwig

Cade Thomas Hartwig, 10, of 2121 Pine Tree Ct., Clear Lake, died Tuesday, Aug. 16, 2016, at the Mercy Medical Center, Des Moines, Iowa.

Funeral Mass was held on Saturday, Aug. 20, 2016, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, 1001 9th Ave. S., Clear Lake, with the Rev. John Gossman officiating. Burial was in the Clear Lake Cemetery, Clear Lake.
