New police officer sworn in

Ashley Lopez was officially sworn in as the newest member of the Clear Lake Police Department at Monday night’s City Council meeting.  Lopez, who will leave for the Law Enforcement Academy at Camp Dodge Aug. 22, will graduate Dec. 9.  Upon her return to Clear Lake she will train in the field with other police officers before beginning patrol in January.

The C.L.A.S.S. Car Cruise and Show is a popular event, but club members and law enforcement, along with a host of others want to try to make the event even safer for continued success.

Kirk Kraft, a member of the C.L.A.S.S. Car Club, spoke to the City Council Monday night.  Kraft told the Council that the car cruise, which draws more than 850 vehicles, received some “unwanted attention” when a driver lost control of his vehicle while performing a “burnout.”

Pool days are dwindling; closing Aug. 28

The Clear Lake Aquatic Center is operating under limited hours as the summer winds downs.

The pool schedule for the remainder of the year is as follows:

•Wednesday, Aug. 17, no evening shift (pool open 1-5 p.m.)

•Thursday-Saturday, Aug 18-20 pool closed.

•Sunday, Aug 21, open 1-5.

•Monday-Friday, Aug 22-26, pool closed.

•Saturday-Sunday, Aug 27-28, pool open 1-5 p.m.  The pool will close for the season at 5 p.m. Sunday, Aug 28.

Florence Collen

Florence E. Collen, 95, of Clear Lake, died Tuesday, August 9, 2016 in Clear Lake surrounded by family.  A service will be held at 10:30 am Wednesday, August 17, 2016 at Ward-Van Slyke, Clear Lake.  Family suggests memorial contributions to Hospice of North Iowa.
