In 1965, 28 Boy Scouts, piled high with enough gear to last them three days, set out from Clear Lake on a Sunday afternoon for the Kennedy field south of town.  They planned to swing back north of Mason City and return to Clear Lake.  The boys were doing work on merit badges.

One of the great attractions of July 4th was the balloon ascension and parachute drop put on by Harry Richards.  After inflating the monstrous craft on the lake shore before 10,000 people, Richards gave the word and the balloon began its flight.  The aeronaut dropped with the intention of falling in the park, but instead landed in a tree just outside the park.  Richards is a Clear Lake resident.
