CL boys fall to Hudson, 6-0

The Clear Lake soccer team is in the heart of its season, playing four matches in the past week against quality competition.

On Monday, May 1, the Lions played host to Hudson, who had a record of 8-1 coming into the match with their only loss being their season opener.   The visitor kept their win streak alive with a 6-0 victory.

West Hancock CoEd Relay

The Cardinals traveled to Britt on Tuesday, May 2, for the West Hancock CoEd Relays.  GHV finished at the bottom of the six-team meet with 48 points.  Central Springs edged West Hancock by just half a point to win the meet with 137.50 points.

The Cardinals picked up the top spots in the 1600 meter run with Reece Smith winning the event in 4:37.97 and Logan Dalbeck claiming runner-up honors in 4:38.91.

Area teams in latest golf rankings

Local high school golf teams are prominently featured in the latest rankings posted by the Iowa High School Golf Coaches Association.

The Clear Lake boys team is rated second in Class 2A, just behind Carroll Kuemper, which finished third at State last year, one place above the Lions.  The Lions’ top two players, seniors Thomas Storbeck and Kyle Calaguas, are ranked seventh and ninth, while Tate Storbeck and Alex Snelling are 34th and 35th on the list.

After a sluggish first half, the Lions shook off the cobwebs from a nine-day lull to fight back and post a road win over Humboldt on the soccer field Thursday, May 4.

The Lions maintained control for much of the second half with solid defensive play.

“Lexie Holtz, Kayla Ritter, Rissa Barragy, Taylor Hill and Taylor Krull kept the ball on our attacking side of the field, which allowed our offensive players to keep control of the tempo,” explained Coach Steve Faber.

The Garner-Hayfield-Ventura girls won a triangular on Monday, May 1, at home.  The Cardinals shot a 195, followed by Lake Mills with a 240 and West Hancock with a 246.
