Rock and roll music legend, friend of the Surf Ballroom Bobby Vee dies at 73

Bobby Vee, who at the age of 15 was recruited with his band, The Shadows, to fill in for Buddy Holly on the Winter Dance Party tour the night after Buddy Holly died in a plane crash outside Clear Lake, died early Monday morning of complications from Alzheimer’s disease. He was 73.

GHV’s Smith wins it all; team also wins

The GHV and Clear Lake boys cross country teams are headed to the State Meet Saturday in Fort Dodge.  Defending Class 2A Champion Garner-Hayfield-Ventura won the District Meet held in Garner Thursday with 46 points.  Clear Lake was runner-up with 54 points. South Winneshiek was third with 61 points.

A team known for its powerful running game put on a strong final performance, as the Garner-Hayfield-Ventura Cardinals (6-3, 4-3) defeated the Osage Green Devils (2-7, 1-6), 42-13.

The game was the season finale for both teams and featured the strengths of both squads.

GHV volleyball team stays focused and advances in Regional play

A focused and aggressive Garner-Hayfield-Ventura volleyball team shut down Hampton-Dumont, 3-0 in the opening round in the Class 3A Region 4 volleyball tournament held on Wednesday, Oct. 19.

“Out main focus tonight was on energy,” said Coach Kelsey Steffens.  “The girls know how to fight and push points.  The combination of determination and energy helped them be successful on the court.”
