The Surf Ballroom & Museum announced Tuesday the artists who are scheduled to appear at its annual 2017 Winter Dance Party event, scheduled for Feb. 1-4.

Roger Backhaus

Roger Backhaus, 74, of Manly, Iowa, died Saturday, Oct. 22, 2016, at home.
    A funeral service for Roger will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Oct. 26, 2016, at Bethel United Methodist Church, 403 East South Street, Manly, with Pastor Don Preston officiating. Burial will be in the Manly Cemetery following the service. 
    Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service on Wednesday at the church.

In a tough-fought game of endurance, the Garner-Hayfield-Ventura Cardinals (5-3, 3-3) fell to the New Hampton Chickasaws (7-1, 5-1) on Friday, Oct. 14. The Cardinals led going into the fourth quarter, but a late-game resurgence by the Chickasaws produced a 15-9 win for the visitor.

Crestwood clinched the Class 2A District 2 title and eliminated Clear Lake from play-off contention for the first time since 1997 with a 27-16 victory Friday night at Lion’s Field.

GHV captures tournament crown

The week was looking dismal for the Garner-Hayfield-Ventura volleyball team, as they dropped two matches earlier in the week, but the Cards came back with a vengeance on Saturday and claimed championship honors at their own tournament.

Clarion-Goldfield 3, GHV 0

It was a tough night for the Garner-Hayfield-Ventura (13-8) volleyball team when they traveled to Clarion-Goldfield (16-15) on Tuesday, Oct. 11.

The Cardinals were shut out with scores of 25-20, 25-13 and 25-14.
