The Clear Lake girls basketball team is headed back to the state tournament.   The 13th-ranked Lions used a 20-7 advantage in the third quarter to open up the game and never looked back in a 59-47 win over North Central Conference rival and eighth-ranked Hampton-Dumont in a Class 3A Regional final played in Mason City Saturday night.

Cardinals put up good fight, but Lions prevail

 Just as they did last season, the Clear Lake and Garner-Hayfield/Ventura girls were ready to do battle for the chance to move a step closer to the State tournament. Like last year, the game was filled with swings in momentum.  And like last year, Clear Lake got the victory, 53-41.

Clear Lake team places 7th at State Duals

The Clear Lake wrestling team capped off a very successful season with a thrilling 37-36 win over Central Lyon/George-Little Rock Wednesday to place seventh at the Class 2A State Duel Meet.

“I couldn’t be more proud of this team” stated coach Weber.  “Central Lyon was 19-0 coming into the tournament, so it is a real feather in the kids’ caps.  Our schedule really helped us prepare for the state tournaments. I would like to thank our athletic director Dale 

Doebel and Leisure are State Champs!

For the first time in Clear Lake High School history, two Clear Lake wrestlers have won State titles in the same year.  Brennen Doebel and Ryan Leisure pulled off the feat Saturday night at Wells Fargo arena.  Doebel did it in exciting fashion, with a thrilling 3-1 overtime win over 53-2 Derek Holschlag, of Union, LaPorte City.  Leisure dominated at 126-pounds, beating Tristin Clark of PCM, Monroe 6-1. 

Clear Lake’s Ryan Schmalen placed third at 120-pounds and Ryan Faught won one match and lost two, just missing out on a top eight finish at 145.

Shaw and Baker represent GHV at State Wrestling Tournament

Garner-Hayfield/Ventura had two qualifiers in the State Tournament and both made the most of their first appearance in Wells Fargo.  Conner Shaw finished sixth at 160-pounds and Cade Baker finished just out of the placements at 170.

School Board makes initial contract offer

The Clear Lake School Board responded to a proposal by the Clear Lake Education Association asking for a 7.11 percent increase in its salary and benefit package for the 2015-16 school year with an initial offer of .79 percent.

The Board met in regular session Monday night.

Board president Mark Tesar explained the district’s offer keeps normal step increases in pay.  Including FICA and IPERS, the package would amount to a total cost to the district of $56,626.

Leading pharmaceutical distributor locating in CL

The McKesson Corporation, the largest pharmaceutical distributor in North America, was introduced Thursday as the future tenant of a 340,000 square foot building under construction in the city’s Larry Luker Memorial Industrial Park.

Proposed memorial moved

A mock-up of a proposed veteran’s memorial has been moved to a third potential location for the public to review.  It is now stationed at the corner of 8th Street and Main Avenue.

The local Veteran’s Memorial Task Force identified three potential locations to place the display, constructed to scale. In January it was at the Seawall in downtown Clear Lake and in early February it was moved to the former City Beach water tower area. 

Men charged with cheating to win ice fishing tournament

Two North Iowa men have been charged for alleged cheating at a fishing tournament on Clear Lake earlier this month.

Aaron Lauber, 23, of Clear Lake, and Jason Schuttler, 25, of Manly, turned in the winning entry of 50 fish weighing 15 pounds, 14 ounces at the Yellow Bass Bonanza held at Clear Lake on Sunday, Feb. 8.

Fortune 100 company announced

McKesson was announced this morning as the Fortune 100 company which will operate a warehouse and distribution center in Clear Lake, Iowa. The company will provide 164 jobs with an average salary of $39,000 when it is at full operation in early 2016.
