Six area wrestlers advance to State Tournament

Four Clear Lake wrestlers and two from Garner-Hayfield/Ventura punched their ticket to state on Saturday at the District tournament held at Webster city.

Clear Lake’s Brennen Doebel (113), Ryan Schmalen (120), Ryan Leisure (126) and Ryan Faught (145) all placed first in the District meet and advance to the Iowa State Wrestling tournament.  GHV’s Conner Shaw (160) was also a winner, while Cade Baker (170) qualified as a runner-up.

Lions top Forest City, 55-35, in Regional action

Three more wins have the Clear Lake girls on the right track at tournament time.  Last week the Lions wrapped up North Central Conference play with wins on the road over Webster City and Algona.  Then the Lions (16-6 and rated number 13 in the final Class 3A poll) pummeled Forest City in the first round of Regional play, 55-35.  In a repeat of last years’ second round post-season game, the team will face Garner-Hayfield/Ventura tonight in a 7 p.m. game in the Clear Lake High School gymnasium.  The winner of that game will play for the Regional title Saturday, Feb.

CL grapplers qualify for State Duals

They say the best offense is a good defense.

Clear Lake Wrestling Coach Gary Weber largely credits defensive wrestling a couple of key matches for his teams’ return to the State Dual Meet Tournament.

Kaleb Froiland, a 145-pounder wrestling in the 160-pound match, wrestled defensively, stayed off his back and helped the Clear Lake Lions qualify for State Dual Meet today in Des Moines.  This is the 12th time in the last 24 years the Lions (21-15) have qualified for State Duals.

Cards top Algona and move on in Regional play

The Garner-Hayfield/Ventura girls are hitting on all cylinders at just the right time of the season, heading into Regional play.  The team topped Lake Mills and went on to advance in the Class 3A Region 2 tournament with a win over Algona.

GHV 60, Lake Mills 56

It was a battle to the end for the GHV girls when they traveled to Lake Mills (10-10, 11-11) on Tuesday, Feb. 10.

It was back-to-back scoring in the first quarter, with the Cardinals managing a slight 12-8 lead at the end of the period.
