Declining school enrollment will challenge boards

Budgeting is always a tough task, but for local school leaders the task is even more daunting in the wake of the district’s largest decline in enrollment in the past five years.

The Clear Lake School District has reported its 2014-15 certified enrollment as 1,209.5.  Enrollment for 2013-14 was 1,236.7, meaning a loss of just over 27 students.  The 2.2 percent drop will amount to a loss of approximately $174,000 in state funding next school year (based on current funding levels).

City offices, library announce schedule for holidays

City Hall and all other city departments will close at 2 p.m. today (Wednesday, Dec. 24), in observance of the Christmas holiday.  All city offices will return to normal operating hours Friday, Dec. 26.

 

City Hall and other city departments will close at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 31, in observance of the New Year’s holiday.  All city offices will return to normal operating hours Friday, Jan. 2.

The Clear Lake Public Library will close at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 24, and 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 31.

Clear Lake man killed in truck roll-over

A Clear Lake man was killed in a single-vehicle accident in Humboldt County Wednesday, Dec. 17.  

The Iowa State Patrol reported that 39-year-old Richard Goscinski was eastbound on County Road C-20, east of Livermore, Iowa when he apparently lost control of his Yohn truck while negotiating a curve.  The vehicle rolled into the northwest ditch. 

Goscinski was pronounced dead at the scene. 

Amosson wraps up service as supervisor

Calling it the most interesting job he’s ever had, Bob Amosson officially steps down as a Cerro Gordo County Supervisor at year’s end.  

Holiday hours for newspaper

The Clear Lake Mirror-Reporter office, 12 N. 4th St., will be closed

 Wedneday and Thursday, Dec. 24-25. 

The office will close at noon Wednesday, Dec. 31.  Normal deadlines are in effect for the next issue of the newspaper.

Lake school leaders oppose late school start

State: No more automatic waivers
 Clear Lake School leaders plan to voice their opposition to an announcement by the director of the Iowa Department of Education, informing school districts it will now be tougher to get a waiver to start classes earlier in the fall.
