Kathy Green

Kathy Green (Zobel), 64, of Mason City, formerly of Clear Lake, died Sunday, April 20, 2014 at the home of her son, after battling with cancer, surrounded by family.

A celebration of life gathering for immediate family will be held at a later date.  Per her wishes, her body was cremated and there will be no visitation.  

Kathy was born Sept. 27, 1949, in Mason City, the daughter of John and Lily (Sorenson) Zobel.  Kathy attended school in Clear Lake and later on in life attained her GED.  She then attended NIACC and studied nursing.

Very good week for Lions

It was a good week for the Clear Lake boys soccer team.  Make that a very good week.  The Lions recorded two shutouts and claimed the championship at the Boone Tournament Saturday.

The Lions started the week by hosting Garner-Hayfield/Ventura Tuesday, April 22.  For the second time this season the Lions prevailed.

Clear Lake’s Dane Waldron earned medalist honors in a North Central Conference triangular played Tuesday, April 22, at Veterans Memorial, however Webster City edged the Lions by a stroke for the win.

Area well represented at Drake Relays

The area was well represented at the Drake Relays last week, with both Clear Lake and Garner-Hayfield/Ventura athletes bringing home medals.

 Clear Lake’s Chandler Diercks won the high school long jump title at the Drake Relays Thursday. The junior’s leap of 23’ 10” topped his own school record, which he set earlier in the week at the Lions Relays.

GHV boys win own meet by a landslide

Victory was sweet for the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura boys track team as they ran their victory lap Monday night, April 21, after winning their own track meet by a land slide.  The Cardinals claimed the eight-team title with 144.50 points.  Second place went to Clarion-Goldfield with 119 points.

“It’s great to see our guys score two places in individual events,” said Coach Kelsey Steffens.  “They should be very proud of their first place finish.”

Clear Lake boys win Lynx Relays; claim runner-up honors at own meet

The Clear Lake boys track team kicked it into high gear last week, finishing as runner-up in their own meet, then winning the Lynx Relays at Webster City. It was the second meet win of the season for the Lions.

It was a very busy week for the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura girls track team.  Not only did they have two girls competing at the Drake Relays, but they also managed to squeeze in two meets.

Megan Merfeld figured in a pair of fourth place finishes for the Lions at the Charles City Girls Comet Invitational Friday. Merfeldd ran a 28.66 in the 200 and anchored the Lions’ 4x200. That relay, which was clocked in 1:58.66, also 

Busy week for CL girls golf team; improve to 7-2

The Clear Lake girls golf team improved to 7-2 overall after a busy week.

On Tuesday April 22, the Lions played in Clarion against Clarion-Goldfield and Webster City. The Lions shot 182, Clarion-Goldfield 192 and Webster City 210. Clear Lake’s Emily Snelling was medalist with 38 and Erin Gates was runner-up medalist with 42. The other counting scores were Paige Backhaus with 45 and Maddie Hess and Maddy Hartnett both shot 57. Rebecca Long shot 61 for the Lions. 

CL girls tennis team improves to 5-1

The Clear Lake girls tennis team improved to 5-1 last week with a pair of shut-out wins over Webster City and St. Edmonds.

“ Each player had a game plan in mind today and stuck to it,” said Coach Mary Jo Peterson, reviewing her team’s 9-0 victory at Webster City Monday, April 21.  “The girls continue to gain confidence in placing the ball.”

The score was close in the opening game, but the remainder of the Lions players coasted to easy wins.
