Clear Lake’s Chandler Diercks smashed a 50-year-old meet record at the Umstead Relays in Eagle Grove Tuesday, April 8.  Diercks, the reigning Class 2A long jump champion, went 22’ 7”, breaking the old record of 22’ 4.5” set at the meet in 1964.

Diercks, who was also a winner in the 100 meter dash in 11.10, helped the Lions to a second place finish among eight teams competing in Class A competition.  The Lions amassed 103 points.  Algona won the meet title with 138 points.

The Garner-Hayfield/Ventura boys track team faced some tough competition in their first meet of the 2014 season.  The boys competed in the Umstead Relays in Eagle Grove on Tuesday, April 8.  The team placed third with 79 points.  Algona won the meet with 138 points, followed by Clear Lake with 103 points.

CL girls track team hosts Early Bird Relays

 The Clear Lake girls track team hosted its Early Bird Relays Tuesday, April 8. Algona ran away with the title, piling up 158 points to easily outdistance runner-up Humboldt with 107. Clear Lake was eighth in the eight-team field with 14 points.

The Lions’ highest placewinner was Megan Merfeld, who was third in the 400 meter dash in 1:08.84.

GHV girls track team places third at opening meet

 

It was a beautiful night for a track meet on Friday, April 11, when the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura girls track team competed in the Bishop Garrigan meet.

The team placed third with 96 points.  Algona won the meet with 188 points and Bishop Garrigan was second with 106 points.  Other teams competing included West Hancock, Forest City and Clear Lake.

Girls tennis team tops IF-A; falls to Mason City

The Clear Lake girls tennis team opened its season with a split against North Iowa competition.  The Lions fell in a close match with Mason City, but then soundly defeated Iowa Falls.

Lunning and Heinemann lead GHV boys golf team

It was a good start to the 2014 golf season for the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura boys golf team, topping West Hancock on Friday, April 11, at the Britt Country Club. The Cardinals won by a whopping 87 strokes, 167-254.
 Mitch Lunning’s 39 led the team and gave him medalist honors.

Clear Lake boys tennis team opens with two wins

The Clear Lake boys tennis team recorded identical 7-2 victories over Iowa Falls-Alden and Mason City during their first week of action.

The Lions won four of six singles matches and swept the doubles on their way to a 7-2 victory over Iowa Falls-Alden on Thursday, April 10.  

GHV girls blank opponent, 10-0

The Garner-Hayfield/Ventura girls soccer team opened the 2014 season strong on Monday, April 7, by shutting out CAL/Hampton-Dumont/Belmond-Klemme 10-0.

“Anytime you score 10 goals and only allow one shot on goal, it is a good day,” said Coach Josh Banse.  “We played very well on both sides of the field.”

Despite the weather, which was breezy and very cold, and the fact that the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura girls golf team has not been on a course yet this season, Monday night’s meet with Clarion-Goldfield could have been worse.  As it was, C-G topped GHV by only four strokes, 208-212, in the first meet of the season.

Duane A. Kuhlers

Duane A. Kuhlers, 83, of Clear Lake, died Friday, April 11, 2014 at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.  A funeral service for Duane will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, April 18, 2014 at the Clear Lake United Methodist Church, 508 2nd Ave. N., Clear Lake, with the Rev. Bernie Colorado and Dr. Rev.
