Chamber announces parade winners

An entry from Friends of 457 was declared the winner in Saturday night’s Christmas By The Lake Lighted Parade.  The volunteer organization, which is dedicated to the preservation of the Minneapolis & St. Louis Railroad steam locomotive in

 East Park in Mason City, was awarded $300 in Clear Lake Chamber Bucks.  Second place and $150 went to the Surf Ballroom, while third place and $75 was awarded to Dickes Dry Wall.

Marion Roth

Marion Roth, age 97, of Menno, S.D., passed away early Saturday, Dec. 7, 2013 at the Menno-Olivet Care Center, Menno, surrounded by her family.  Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2013 at the Grace Lutheran Church, Menno, with Rev. Theresa Jacobson officiating.  Burial was in the Unity Lutheran Cemetery, rural Clayton, S.D.  

Pallbearers were her great-grandsons, Trent Chance, Cameron VanBeek, and Jaron VanBeek; her grandsons-in-law, Kevin VanBeek, Brian Mckinney; and nephew, Warren Mitchell.

Margaret Simmer

Margaret Simmer, 97, Clear Lake, died Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2013 at the Oakwood Care Center, Clear Lake.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 12, 2013 at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. 4th St., Clear Lake, with Bob Orr officiating.  Visitation will be Wednesday from 5 - 7 p.m.  and then one hour before the 

service on Thursday at the funeral home.  Burial will be in Clear Lake Cemetery.  Family suggests memorials to the Margaret Simmer memorial fund.

The Clear Lake wrestling team is off to a great start with five wins last week. 

CL girls dominate two conference opponents

Ninth ranked (3A) Clear Lake dominated a pair of North Central Conference opponents last week, improving to 2-1 in the young season.

There was no stopping the Clear Lake freight train Tuesday night in Iowa Falls.  The Lions shot out to a 23-3 first quarter lead and held the Cadets to single digit scoring in each quarter, ending in a 64-20 final score.

The Clear Lake boys unleashed a powerful run game and stomped the competition in their season-opening games last week.

GHV wrestlers compete in St. Ansgar Tournament

The Garner-Hayfield/Ventura wrestlers competed in the St. Ansgar Tournament on Saturday, Dec. 7.  The team ended the day with a 2-2 record.

“We wrestled very well on Saturday,” said Coach Steve Smith.  “Tucker Datema wrestled a great match in the New 

Hampton dual.  For his first year out, he gave that kid everything he wanted.”

GHV boys open season with two wins and a loss

 

The Garner-Hayfield/Ventura boys basketball team finished the week with a 2-1 record.

GHV 62, North Union 42

The Cardinals had an impressive opening to the 2013-14 season, dominating North Union, 62-42.

GHV jumped to an early 19-5 first quarter lead behind the hot hand of senior Joel Toppin.  By halftime, the Cards stretched the lead to 39-20.

Week of ups and downs for GHV girls

 

It was a week of ups and downs for the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura girls basketball team.  The girls picked up a big win against North Union, but fell hard to North Butler.

An explosive third quarter was the key to the Cardinals’ 43-27 victory over North Union on Tuesday, Dec. 3.

Jerry A. Thorson, 73, of Waverly, Iowa, formerly of St. Ansgar, Iowa, died on Wednesday afternoon, Nov. 27, 2013 at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home in Waterloo.
