They say defense wins championships.  If that’s true, it’s going to be a good week for Clear Lake.

Thanks to some lockdown defense, Clear Lake is headed to the Class 3A semifinals for the second straight year.   The second-ranked Lions held Waukon to three field goals and 12 points over the final three quarters en route to a 45-24 victory Monday that concluded the first day of the 2021 State Tournament.

Lions win a close one in Class 3A Sub-State semifinals

The Lions stepped up their defense in the second half and held on to win against Spencer, 58-55, in the Class 3A Sub-State semifinals played Thursday in Clear Lake.  The victory put the Lions in the Sub-State finals against Humboldt Tuesday night (March 2).  Clear Lake (21-2) and Humboldt (15-7) met twice during the regular season, with each team picking up a win on the road.

Kathryn M. Alden

Kathryn Mae Alden, 90, of Clear Lake, died Thursday, Feb. 25, 2021, at MercyOne North Iowa Hospice, in Mason City, after a long battle with cancer.

Per Kathryn’s wishes, her body has been cremated and no services are scheduled at this time. Inurnment will be at Ell Township Cemetery, in Klemme.

Kathryn was born June 4, 1930, the daughter of William and Lydia (Herwald) Velau, in Klemme. She married Donald Alden on Feb. 12, 1949, in Klemme. He preceded her in death on June 11, 1983.

Lester E. Taylor

Lester Eugene Taylor, 77, of Clear Lake, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 24, 2021, at his home.

Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, a private family Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Inurnment will be at Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.

Family suggests memorial contributions to the Clear Lake Public Library.

Lester was born June 22, 1943, the son of Gilbert and Arlene (Terrell) Taylor, in Hansell, Iowa. He married Leona Meyer on Aug. 4, 1963, in Hampton, Iowa. She preceded him in death on April 10, 2018.
