CL firm submits lowest base bid for $11M project

A Clear Lake construction company is the lowest of eight bidders on the community wellness center planned by the Clear Lake School District and city.

City Administrator Scott Flory told the City Council Monday night that Dean Snyder Construction, of Clear Lake, submitted a base bid of $10.2 million for the project.  With alternates, Dean Snyder’s bid was $10.7 million.

14-year-old killed in PWC accident

A collision involving two personal watercraft (PWC) on Clear Lake claimed the life of a 14-year-old Tuesday, Aug. 11.

The accident occurred at approximately noon on the south shore of the lake.  Emergency personnel responded by fire boat and ambulance.

Fourteen-year-old Ezra Sheldon, of Iowa City, has been identified on social media, through the posting of a GoFundMe page, as the deceased.

Winan Creek Barn is ready to welcome guests

What started out as a dream for Mike and Angie Lester has turned into a beautiful wedding venue north of Clear Lake called Winan Creek Barn.

“I had a friend in high school who lived in a barn house and I absolutely loved it,” said Angie.  “We live on an acreage and up the road from us was a barn that I often admired.  Mike did some research, found the owner, wrote him a letter and he contacted us a couple of weeks later.”

Dr. Robert G. Brown

Dr. Robert Grover Brown (“Grover”), 94, passed away peacefully on Aug. 10, 2020.

A celebration of life will be planned at a future date.

Grover was born on April 25, 1926, in Shenandoah, Iowa, to Grover Whitney and Irene (Frink) Brown. Upon high school graduation in 1944, he enlisted in the United States Navy.  He served honorably until his discharge in 1946.

S. Gladys Schoneman

S. Gladys Schoneman, 98, of Clear Lake, passed away peacefully Friday, Aug. 7, 2020, at Hancock County Memorial Hospital, in Britt.

  A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 22, at the Cataldo Funeral Chapel, 160 E. 4th St., Garner, with Mark Schoneman officiating.  Private inurnment will be at Pleasant View Cemetery, in Thornton.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the funeral chapel.  Masks are encouraged and social distancing guidelines will be observed.
