City names interim public works director

Jeremy Korenberg has been named interim Public Works Director for the City of Clear Lake.  The City Council approved the hiring at its meeting Monday night, Oct. 19.

Korenberg, who currently serves as Operations and Maintenance Superintendent for the City, steps into the post previously held by Joe Weigel, who retired last month after 31 years with the city.

The Iowa Alcoholic Beverages Division (ABD) announced Monday that the Surf District Bar and Restaurant in Clear Lake has been ordered to serve a 21-day suspension for violating state liquor laws.

According to the ABD, a hearing complaint was filed on July 2, 2020, alleging that the establishment reused and refilled liquor containers in violation of the Iowa Code.

Just like almost every event in 2020, Clear Lake’s holiday celebration will take on a new look this year.

Due to challenges presented by COVID-19, the Clear Lake Area Chamber of Commerce has announced it is unable to present its annual Christmas By The Lake event in its usual fashion.

U.S. Senate race: Ernst challenged by Greenfield

The race for a seat in the U.S. Senate pits Republican incumbent Joni Ernst against Democratic challenger Theresa Greenfield, a Des Moines businesswoman. The race is considered one of the most competitive - and expensive- Senate contests in the country. Ernst is seeking a second term, while Greenfield has not previously held elected office.

The candidates graciously responded to a questionnaire prepared by Mid-America Publishing newspapers to introduce themselves to voters and explain their positions on a variety of issues.

Delores “Dee” Estella Miles (Falada), 91, of Clear Lake, died on Monday, Oct. 12, 2020, at Oakwood Care Center, in Clear Lake.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 7, 2020, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, 1001 9th Ave. S., Clear Lake, with the Rev. John Gossman officiating.  Inurnment will be at Clear Lake Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4-6 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 6, at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 310 1st Ave. N., Clear Lake, where a Scriptural Wake Service will begin at 5:45 p.m.
