City prepares Surf District gateway site

The City of Clear Lake has begun demolishing a home located near the Highway 18 and Buddy Holly Place intersection to ready the site for a gateway to the Surf Ballroom District of town.

At its regular meeting Monday, the Council approved asbestos abatement at 813 Buddy Holly Place.  The city purchased the property in March with the intention of demolishing it.

Community supports One Vision 49th annual Benefit Walk

(Above) One Vision’s inaugural Community Challenge was a new component to this year’s event.  Teams from across North Iowa signed up and raised funds to participate in the Challenge, which this year was a human foosball tournament, with the winner taking home a traveling trophy and bragging rights.-Reporter photo by Chris Barragy.

(Above) 1922 Oaks Hotel fireIt was July 20, 1922, when the Oaks Hotel burned.  The fire reportedly started from a defect in the electrical wiring on the roof.  The fire raged for over five hours.  The Oaks, four stories high, held 40 rooms, and was one of the most fashionable spots in Clear Lake.
