Dry conditions spark field fires, red flag warnings

Extremely dry conditions, coupled with wind, have resulted in a number of field fires in North Iowa, like this blaze which broke out Wednesday, Oct. 14, between Clear Lake and Mason City. A Red Flag Warning has been posted statewide for all but a few counties in northwest Iowa. The National Weather Service says the risk of wildfires is high due to strong winds, low humidity and dry vegetation. Farmers need to be especially cautious as they harvest dry crops. Farmers are urged to be very careful about bearings give their equipment frequent breaks to cool off and for clean up.

Supervisors show support for grant application for rail facility

The Cerro Gordo County Board of Supervisors has approved a grant application in support of the construction of a trans-load rail facility in Emery between Mason City and Clear Lake.

Tuesday, Oct. 13 Supervisors gave their support to a $656,000 facility which would initially employ five persons.

Tyler Williams, superintendent of the Garner-Hayfield-Ventura Community School District, was a finalist for the 2015-16 Iowa Superintendent of the Year award sponsored by the School Administrators of Iowa.

With better weather conditions than in past years, the Clear Lake Lions once again set many personal bests at the Dick Bell Cross Country Invitational hosted by Eagle Grove Tuesday, Oct. 6.  In fact, three-quarters of the Lions set personal bests on a very fast evening.
