Lion wrestlers open season Thursday at home against St. Eds

The Clear Lake wrestling team opens up its schedule Thursday, Dec. 5, at 6:30 p.m. against Ft. Dodge St. Edmond.   The Lions begin the season ranked seventh in Class 2A; St. Ed’s is rated sixth in Class 1A.

“They usually do not have very many junior varsity kids, so we could be starting early,” stated Lion Coach Gary Weber. 

Area runners compete at State Cross Country Meet

Three area athletes competed in the Class 3A State Cross Country meet held over the weekend in Fort Dodge, Iowa.

Antonio DiMarco, a senior from Clear Lake, finished 31st in a field of 130.  He ran the course in 

17:02.  DiMarco improved his finishing mark by 35 places from last year’s State meet.

CL girls fold to tough competition

The challenge of competing against some of North Iowa’s best teams will hopefully pay off for the Clear Lake volleyball team down the stretch.  Last week the Lions played in a tournament hosted by Mason City and battled conference power Algona.  

 

Lions roar back for a 35-14 victory over W-SR

 

Second half adjustments were the difference for Clear Lake in the Lions’ Class 3A District 3 opener played at Waverly-Shell Rock Friday, Sept. 20.  The Lions trailed 7-6 at halftime, but roared back for a 35-14 victory to improve to 4-0 overall.

Number five ranked Clear Lake struck quickly, scoring on their first play from scrimmage, but the remainder of the first half was filled with missed opportunities.

CL volleyball team sweeps Eagle Grove

 

The Clear Lake varsity volleyball team swept Eagle Grove 3-0 in a match played Thursday, Sept. 5, in Eagle Grove.  The Lions prevailed, 25-17, 25-13, 25-14.  The victory puts the Lions at 3-3 in match play and 1-0 in the conference.

Coach Scott Swenson called the win a “total team effort.”

“The play of Carney Frahm, Sidney Borrill, Katie Hewitt, Sam Wilkinson and Marcie Dick was instrumental in making this a total team effort against Eagle Grove. The girls played with a lot of enthusiasm and vitality,” said Swenson.

G-H/V softball team lands three on NIC All-Conference lists

 

Three members of the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura softball team received All-Conference honors in the North Iowa Conference.

Maddie Tusha, a junior, received First Team All-Conference recognition.  Tusha, who plays centerfield, had a batting average of .384.  She had 27 single base hits and two doubles.  She scored 15 runs for the Cardinals and never struck out.

Cardinals pick up three wins

 

It was a good week for Cardinal baseball, as they topped Belmond-Klemme and swept a double header from North Iowa, moving their record to 8-14.

Garner-Hayfield/Ventura held Belmond-Klemme scoreless on Wednesday, June 26, on their way to a 4-0 victory.

Two Lions named to All-State Soccer Teams

 

 The Iowa High School Soccer Coaches Association (IHSSCA) has released its 2013 All-State Teams in boys’ soccer for Class 1A, 2A, and 3A.

In Class 2A, Clear Lake’s Antonio DiMarco was a Second Team selection.  The senior mid-fielder helped to lead the Lions to an 11-5 season.   DiMarco scored 15 goals while playing in 16 games.   

Lions goal keeper Bryson Hamilton received Class 2A Honorable Mention as a goal keeper. 

Miserable start to the season for CL softball team

 

Central Springs gave the Clear Lake girls softball team a rough start to the 2013 season, walloping the Lions 17-1 in three rainy and cold innings played Wednesday, May 22.

 

Golf team advances with an ugly win

 

It wasn’t pretty, but the Clear Lake boys golf team got the job done.

Despite playing their worst 18-hole tournament of the year, the Lions were good enough to advance in post-season play on Friday at Decorah.  

“Advancing-- that is the name of the game,” said Coach Eric Perry.  “The good news is, we have a lot to work on, and it is a week away.”
