Lions are State Champions!

 

Clear Lake’s 2013 baseball team has been known by several names this season-- Cardiac Kids,  Comeback Kids,  The Incredibles, North Central Conference Champions and District Champions.

Add one more to the list.

State Champions.

The Garner-Hayfield/Ventura baseball team started the week off slow with two losses, but picked it up at the end of the week with a win over West Hancock, before dropping two games to Newman.

Algona 9, G-H/V 8

The Garner-Hayfield/Ventura baseball team was one run short of a win on Tuesday, June 11, at Algona.

Lions finish third at State Meet

 

Creston-Orient/Macksburg overcame a three stroke lead held by the Clear Lake boys golf team after the first day of State competition and won the Class 3A title Saturday in Ames.  The Lions, with two players in the top six, finished third.

“Like most of the season, weather was a main contributor at our tournament. With the lead after day one, we were probably one more thunderstorm away from winning our school’s seventh state 

G-H/V girls place fourth at Regional Golf Meet

 

The Garner-Hayfield/Ventura girls golf team wrapped up the season with a fourth place finish out of eight teams at the Regional Golf Meet.  Kuemper Catholic won the meet with 383 points, followed by Hampton-Dumont with 401, Algona with a 425 and G-H/V with 432.

CL girls soccer team out to avenge loss

 

The Clear Lake girls soccer team will have a chance to avenge their only loss this season when they meet Aplington-Parkersburg in the post-season.  The Lions are slated to meet the Falcons in the opening match of the Class 1A Regionals May 28 in Aplington.

A-P recorded a 1-0 victory over the Lions April 30 in a match stopped with 17-minutes to play due to lightning.  

The Falcons scored the only goal of the night just two and one-half minutes into the match with a long cross into the goal through a line of Lion defenders.

G-H/V girls golf team captures top honors

 

The Garner-Hayfield/Ventura girls golf team competed in two meets last week.

North Iowa Meet

On Friday, April 26, North Iowa hosted a meet and the Cards brought home top honors with a score of 217.  Also competing were Lake Mills (241), North Iowa (245) and West Hancock (279).

Kyleigh Slaichert won medalist honors, carding a 48.

Total team effort as CL girls tennis team defeats St. Eds

 

It was a truly a team win for the Clear Lake girls tennis team on Monday, April 8.  The Lions edged St. Ed’s, 5-4, on the strength of a super tie-breaker in the number three doubles match.  

The Lions won just two of six singles matches, but swept the three doubles contests for the victory.

“Every win was important today, but the match ultimately came down to our number three doubles team of Amie Adams and Alexis Atkinson.  They battled for every point and did not give up,” said Coach Mary Jo Peterson.

Eagle Grove to leave North Central Conference

 

A second member of the North Central Conference has announced it will be leaving the league, beginning with the 2014-15 school year.

Last week Eagle Grove voted 3-2 to become a member of the North Iowa Conference.  They join Bishop Garrigan as NCC teams moving to the NIC.  Pending Eagle Grove’s move to the NIC, the North Central Conference would have eight members.

Girls cruise to fifth straight win

Five players scored in double figures, helping the Clear Lake girls to a 67-38 win over Bishop Garrigan Tuesday, Dec. 17.  The win was the fifth straight for the Lions, who are ranked seventh in Class 3A.
