Jule C. McCullough

Jule Claire McCullough, age 70, of Pine Island, Minn., passed away peacefully with her family by her side on Tuesday, April 7, 2015, at Saint Mary’s Hospital, in Rochester, Minn.

Funeral services were held on Monday, April 13, 2015, at Saint Paul Lutheran Church in Pine Island, with Pastor Kip Groettum and Pastor Audrey Lukasak officiating.  Burial was in the Pine Island Cemetery.

Wilbur D. Peck

Wilbur Duane Peck, 80, Ventura, Iowa, died Tuesday, April 7, 2015 at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City, Iowa.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, April 11, 2015, at the Clear Lake United Methodist Church, Clear Lake, with Rev. Bernie Colorado officiating.  Burial was in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.  

Family suggests memorials to Wilbur Duane Peck Memorial Fund.  The family would like to thank Hospice of North Iowa for the special care that was given to Duane. 

Dale A. Barkema

Dale A. Barkema, 85, of Clear Lake, died Sunday, April 5, 2015, at the VA Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa.  Visitation was held on Saturday, April 11, 2015, at the Elk Creek Lutheran Church, 4108 Kildeer Avenue, Kensett, Iowa, followed by graveside services at the Elk Creek Cemetery in Kensett, with Pastor Tom Martin officiating.  Military honors were conducted by the Mason City Veterans 

Association.  

Albert R. Swale, Jr.

Albert Roy Swale, Jr., 89, of Clear Lake, died April 3, 2015, at Oakwood Care Center in Clear Lake. 

Per Al’s wishes, his body has been cremated.  Graveside inurnment will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, May 8, 2015, in West Union Cemetery, West Union, Iowa.

Al was born Jan. 18, 1926, in West Union, the son of Albert and Ethel (Matzenger) Swale. He graduated from West Union High School, class of 1943.

Mary L. O’Banion

Mary Lavonne O’Banion, 87, of Mason City, Iowa died Monday at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Funeral services were held on Friday April 10, 2015, at the Epiphany Parish, St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mason City.  Burial was in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery, Mason City.

Mary was born Feb. 27, 1928, in Clear Lake, the daughter of Ray and Rena (Murphy) Rice.  She attended school in Clear Lake and was a member of the class of 1947.

Lions dominate in opening soccer games

The Clear Lake boys soccer team kicked off the season last week with a pair of dominating wins.  The Lions, ranked number three in the pre-season poll, scored 10 goals in wins over Garner-Hayfield/Ventura and Humboldt.

Mason City tops Clear Lake in tennis action

Mason City edged Clear Lake, 5-4, in the first tennis meet of the season for the Lions, played Monday, April 6, at Mason City.

GHV boys claim top honors at Cowboy Relays

It was a good opening meet for the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura boys, as they placed second at the Bob Sanger Relays held in Britt on April 7.  Northwood-Kensett won the meet with 134 points, followed by GHV with 125 and Lake Mills was third with 121.

“It was a competitive first meet,” said Coach Kelsey Steffens.  “Now we can re-adjust our practices to fine tune and continue training for the meets ahead.”

Charlson resigns football coaching position

Longtime Clear Lake High School Assistant Football Coach Curt Charlson has submitted his coaching resignation, effective for the 2015 season.  Charlson has been an integral part of the successful Lion football program since the fall of 1974. 

 

Cardinals drop a close soccer match to IF-A

Despite a slow start, the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura boys soccer team came back fighting and gave Iowa Falls-Alden a good game on Monday, April 13.  The Cadets ended up beating the Cardinals, 2-1.
