Waldron earns medalist honors; Lions place third

Clear Lake’s Dane Waldron earned his own version of a Master’s green jacket as medalist at the 2015 Dutch Master’s held at Bos Landing at Pella Saturday.  Waldron, a junior, claimed medalist honors with a 76, three strokes better than runner-up Spencer Tucker, of Oskaloosa.  Coleton Hoepker, of Creston with an 81.

GHV track girls compete in Bob Sanger Relays

The Garner-Hayfield/Ventura girls learned they have some highlights to look forward to this season and some areas they need to improve as they opened the season at the Bob Sanger Relays, held in Britt, in Tuesday, April 7.

The team placed fourth in the five-team field with 105 points.  Northwood-Kensett won the meet with 178 points.

GHV falls to C-G-D in first golf meet of the season

Nerves and a tricky course led the Garner-Hayfiled/Ventura boys golf team to drop their first meet of the season.  They lost by five strokes to Clarion-Goldfield-Dows on Monday, April 6, at Claremont Golf Course in Clarion.  C-G/D carded a 182 to the Cardinal’s 187.

Grady Umburger led the team with a 45.

“Grady struck the ball well, but had some problems with the short game,” said Coach Ken Krause.

Lions claim runner-up honors at Cowboy Relays

The Clear Lake boys raced to a runner-up finish at the Cowboy Relays held Friday in Clarion.  A disqualification in the 4 x 200 proved costly for the Lions, as they finished second in the 2A division to Garner-Hayfield/Ventura, 121 to 116. Forest City was third with 104 points.

“They beat us by five, but we still had a very good meet,” said Lions Coach A.J. Feuerbach.

CL tops IF-A, falls to Mason City in recent tennis action

The Clear Lake girls tennis team took on Mason City and Iowa Falls-Alden last week.  The Lions moved their record to 2-1 with a split.

GHV soccer girls hand CAL an 8-0 shut-out

The first game of the season was a real confidence booster for the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura girls soccer team, as they picked up a win.  The Cardinals defeated  CAL, 8-0, on Monday, April 6.

“I thought we played really well for the first time out this year.  We attacked the goal well once we got our feet wet and started playing a little,” said Coach Josh Banse.

Jacki Van Oort accounted for three of the eight goals.  Emily Spilman recorded one goal, while Tiara Van Gerpen, Autumn Weaver and Payton Bamrick had one goal apiece.

Clear Lake girls soccer team shut-out in season opener

An experienced Aplington-Parkersburg team shut out the Clear Lake girls in the season opener for the Lions.  A-P outscored the Lions, 7-0.

Coach Nick DiMarco said his team got off to a rough start, but played progressively better as the game went on. 

“Overall, I felt we showed tremendous growth over the course of the game.  The younger kids played with much more confidence the second half of the game,” he said.

A-P help a 6-0 lead at halftime, but was held in check in the second half.

Brenda Olson

Brenda “Bren” Quincey Olson, 62, died on Monday, March 23, 2015, at Valley Spring, S.D.

A funeral service was held on Saturday, March 28, 2015 at George Boom Funeral Chapel, Brandon, S.D., with the Reverend William Bates officiating.  Interment was in Swedona Cemetery, rural Brandon.

Albert Swale, Jr.

Albert R. Swale, Jr., 89, of Clear Lake, died April 3, 2015, at Oakwood Care Center, in Clear Lake. 

Per Al’s wishes, his body has been cremated and a memorial service will be held at a later date.  Inurnment will be in West Union Cemetery, in West Union, Iowa.

Al was born Jan. 18, 1926, in West Union, the son of Albert and Ethel (Matzenger) Swale. He graduated from West Union High School, class of 1943.
