James F. Waner

James F. Waner, 71, of Estero, Fla., died Friday, March 13, 2015. Formerly of Iowa, he had been an Estero resident since 2011. 

He was born March 30, 1943 in Wichita, Kan., the son of Joseph Edward and Geneva Pauline (née Scherer) Waner.  Jim grew up on the family farm outside of Florence, Kan.  He went to Florence high school, and then later went to Kansas State University. 

Jim met Valeta (Vee) Fernberg through a friend of Vee’s. They were married June 1, 1963. Together they had two sons, Greg and Roger.

David H. Hopper

David Holtan Hopper, infant son of David Matthew and Mary Sena (Pederson) Hopper of Clear Lake, was stillborn Wednesday, March 11, 2015 at Mercy Medical Center North Iowa, Mason City, Iowa.

Per his family’s wishes, David has been cremated and a private family inurnment will be at a later date.  Family suggests memorials to Mercy Foundation Birth Center.

Educators, students react to proposed school cuts

Clear Lake teachers, students and members of the community packed the meeting room of the School Board Monday night to offer their comments about proposed cuts to help the district meet its 2015-16 budget.

Superintendent Anita Micich explained the district is currently spending an estimated $600,000 more than its general fund supports.  

Semi hits stalled truck, killing one

One person was killed and another seriously injured when a semi struck a stalled pickup truck on Interstate 35 near Clear Lake Thursday, March 19.

 

Lynn Benson appointed new mayor of Ventura

Lynn Benson has been appointed as the new mayor of Ventura.  

Benson, a retired business owner, said he had never thought about running for office, but decided to take on the position after Art Tesar resigned from the post because he was moving out of the community.

Suprise phone call leads to Spring photo shoot

The winter snows had melted. North Iowa ponds were thawing and the spring duck migration was gathering a full head of steam. I was contemplating where to go; how to “get out among ‘em” when my cell phone buzzed. It was fellow waterfowl enthusiast, Al Hancock.

The ice is OUT!

 Although it feels like winter is hanging on, a sure sign of spring has arrived. The ice has been declared “out” on Clear Lake.

 Officials from the Water Treatment Plant called “ice-out” on Tuesday, March 24.
 The lake was declared officially frozen on Nov. 17, 2014. At that time the lake level was -1.20 inches below the weir. Watch for a new reading in next week’s Mirror-Reporter.

Ruth Friest

 Ruth Friest died March 12, 2015, at Lutheran Living Campus in Muscatine, Iowa.

     A funeral service was held on Monday, March 16, at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, with the Rev. Kirk Wilkie officiating.    Interment was at Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City, Iowa.  Memorials may be given to the Lutheran Living Campus, Muscatine. 

Andres De La Cruz

Andres (Andy) De La Cruz Sr., 86, of Clear Lake, died at home.  Due to his wishes he was cremated.

A prayer service was held at St. Patrick Catholic Church, in Clear Lake, on Tuesday, March 17, 2015. 

Andres was born in Alamo, Texas, the son of Jose and Benita (Solis) De La Cruz.   He attended school in Alamo.
