Dorothy A. Wenzel

 Dorothy Ann Wenzel, 83, 126 N. 14th St., Clear Lake, died Wednesday, July 23, 2014 at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City, Iowa.
 A funeral service was held on Saturday, July 26 at Zion Lutheran Church, 112 N. 4th St., Clear Lake, with Rev. Kirk Wilke officiating. Graveside services were held on Monday, July 28, 2014 at Maplewood Cemetery, Luverne, Minn., with Rev. Mark Mumme, of Zion Lutheran Church, Hardwick, Minn. officiating.

Thomas J. Kirschbaum

 Thomas Joseph Kirschbaum, 64, of Clear Lake, Iowa, formerly Fertile, Iowa, died Wednesday July 23, 2014 at his home in Clear Lake.

 Services are pending at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. 4th St., Clear Lake.

Jolene Johnson

Word has been received of the passing of Jolene Johnson, of Maui, Hawaii.

 Jolene was a 1960 graduate of Ventura High School.
 Her first cousins that live in the area include Jim Cash and Mike Cash, both of Ventura; and Walt Cash, Stub Cash and Vickie Nelson, all of Clear Lake. Her mother, Winnie (Cash) Lane, lives in California.

CLHS Dance Team earns high honors at MA Dance Camp

The Clear Lake High School Dance Team attended MA Dance Camp at Hy-Vee Hall in Des Moines, Iowa, on July 17-19.

LeFevre earns Superior rating

Clear Lake Middle School student Emily LeFevre attended the MA Dance Camp at Hy-Vee Hall in Des Moines, July 17-19.

 Emily received the highest rating of Superior on her solo performance and was named Solo Champion for her age division.  She also received All-Star and Honor Roll awards.

Three Cardinals earn post-season honors

Three Garner-Hayfield/Ventura softball players were named to the North Iowa Conference All-Conference teams.  
 Senior Maddie Tusha was named to the NIC’s First Team.  Junior Tiara Van Gerpen was named to the NIC Second Team, while Mallory Van Oort earned Honorable Mention recognition.

Niles named to NCC Second Team

 Clear Lake High School freshman Michaela Niles has been named to the All-North Central Conference teams. Niles, an outfielder for the Lions, was a Second Team pick.

School Board will accept nominations until Aug. 5 to fill vacancy

 All persons interested in filling a one-year vacancy on the Clear Lake School Board are asked to submit a cover letter and resume by Aug. 5. Interviews will be conducted Aug. 11.

School Board retains Kelly Services to hire substitutes

 The Clear Lake School Board renewed its contract with Kelly Educational Services (KES) Monday night to handle substitute staffing for the school district.
 On a 3-1 vote, with Board member Chyrl Bergvig voting against the measure, a one-year contract with KES was approved. Board President Chad Kuhlers was absent.
