There was no greater spectator sport in Clear Lake last week than watching the iconic City Beach water tower come down.

Clear Lake’s Surf Ballroom makes Rolling Stones’ list of ‘coolest clubs’

Some of rock and roll’s greatest performers have found their way to the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake in recent years-- and they are apparently singing its praises.  

So much so, in fact, that the Surf Ballroom has been named as one of 20 “Venues That Rock” by Rolling Stone magazine.

Donald Miller

 

Donald L. Miller, 69, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, passed away on Saturday, April 13, 2013 at St. Luke’s Hospital from a long illness.   A memorial service was held on Tuesday, April 16, 2013 at Cedar Memorial Park Westside Chapel.

Donald Leroy Miller was born on Oct. 10, 1943 to Leroy W. and Florence Venchuk Miller in Mason City, Iowa.  

Don was a Past Worthy President and 40-year member of Eagles Club Aerie 2272.  He enjoyed spending time with his family and grandchildren.

Norman Taylor

 

Norman D. Taylor, 62, of Hanlontown, Iowa, died following a courageous battle with cancer Thursday, April 18, 2013 at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City, Iowa. 

Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 28, 2013 at the Grace Lutheran Church, Hanlontown, with Pastor 

Lions top Cardinals in girls soccer showdown

 

Ivy Hogg scored four goals and led the Clear Lake girls soccer team to a 9-0 victory over Garner-Hayfield/Ventura Tuesday, April 16.  The win kept the Lions undefeated at 3-0.

Lions get track season underway

 

Clear Lake high jumper Sidney Borrill picked up a win and distance runner Sierra Greiman earned a pair of top three finishes at the Cardinal Relays held last week in Garner.  The Lions finished sixth in the field of 

eight with 71 points.  Eagle Grove won the meet with 107 points.

G-H/V girls host Cardinal Relays

 

The weather finally cleared enough to let the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura girls track team compete.  The Cardinals hosted 14 schools on Tuesday, April 16.  The Cardinals competed in Class A, where they placed fifth in the eight team competition.  Eagle Grove won the Class A division with 107 points.

Strong start for CL boys track team

 

The Clear Lake boys track team got their season started on the right foot. The Lions recorded their highest placement in many years at Clarion, finishing second in the field of six teams in their class April 5.  Iowa Falls-Alden captured the team title with 119 points.  The Lions were runner-up with 106 and Forest City was third with 98 points.  Rounding out the field was Hampton-Dumont (76), Garner-Hayfield/Ventura (67) and Clarion-Goldfield (58).

CL boys top Lynx by two strokes for victory

The Clear Lake boys golf team topped Webster City and Clarion-Goldfield in a triangular meet held Tuesday, April 16.  The Lions earned a two stroke victory over Webster City, 164-166.  The Cowboys were third among the North Central Conference teams with 175.

Clear Lake’s Dane Waldron finished in a three-way tie for medalist honors with a 39.  Logan Yates, from Webster City, and Chris Staudt, of Clarion-Goldfield, also shot 39s.
