CLHS Honor Society, 1970

Twelve new members were initiated into the Semper Fidelis Chapter of the National Honor Society in Clear Lake in 1970.  New members included front row (L-R): Jean Prestholt, Debby Cooper, Sally Humbrg, Carolin Opheim, Rita Bless, Lorraine Scott.  Back row (L-R):  Louis Schuler, John Ritter, Eric Thomsen, Mike Madson, Al Hayward and Mike Chaney.  Candidates were judged on their scholastic ability, character, leadership and service.

(Above) Walden Condominium fire, 1995 - Firefighters had a difficult time attacking a fire in 1995 at the Walden Condominium units, in Ventura, because of the large degree of structural damage which occurred.  Floors and ceilings collapsed in some of the units, forcing firefighters to largely fight the blaze from the windows.  Ventura, Clear Lake and Garner firefighters were able to confine the heaviest damage to the center four units of the 10-unit complex.  Roughly 160,000 to 170,000 gallons of water were used to fight the fire.  Ventura’s water tower holds a

Five Clear Lake boys named to NCC All-Conference teams

Five members of the North Central Conference champion Clear Lake Lions have been named to All-conference teams, and for the first time in school history three Lion players were named to the First Team.  

Clear Lake junior Andrew Formanek was one of three unanimous selections to the NCC First Team.  He was joined on the First Team by senior Jaylen DeVries and sophomore Carson Toebe.

School closures suspend high school spring sports

Following Sunday’s announcements from Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds, all spring activities of Iowa’s high school Unified Activities partners – the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union, the Iowa High School Athletic Association, the Iowa High School Music Association, and the Iowa High School Speech Association – will be prohibited through the state’s K-12 school recommended closure of four weeks.

Billy Roy Howard

Billy Roy Howard, 86, of Clear Lake, passed away Saturday, March 14, 2020, at his home in Clear Lake.

Funeral arrangements are pending at this time at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the family and a charity will be established at a later date.
