Ella Ida Ernst, 102, of Mason City, formerly of Clear Lake, died Friday, Aug. 24, 2018, at Heritage Care and Rehabilitation Center, in Mason City.

Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 29, at the Clear Lake Cemetery.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. 4th St., Clear Lake.

Ella was born July 6, 1916, the daughter of Fredrick William and Elizabeth JoHanna (Fricke) Ernst, in Magdeburg, Germany.

Clear Lake cross country teams compete at Iowa Falls Invitational

The Lions kicked off the 2018 cross country season Thursday, Aug. 23, at the Iowa Falls Invitational held at Maynes Grove Park.

Coach Nick DiMarco said this year’s squad is an equal mix of experienced upperclassmen and runners who are new to the sport.  The combination was good, as the Lions finished fourth in the nine-team race featuring 155 boys.

Cardinals open season with an OT victory

It was one for the record book Friday night when the Garner-Hayfield-Ventura football team faced West Hancock on the road.  The Cardinals pulled off a 7-0 overtime victory over the Eagles, who were rated number four in the Class A Radio Iowa pre-season poll.  The Cardinals had not had an overtime game since 2008 and they hadn’t had an overtime win since 2002.
