Four Clear Lake girls earn All-North Central Conference recognition

Four members of the Clear Lake softball team have been honored with All-North Central Conference distinction.

Infielder Julia Merfeld and outfielder Sara Faber were First Team All-NCC selections.  Rachel Barillas and Macy Mixdorf were named to the All-NCC Third Team.

Merfeld, a sophomore, led the Lions with a .393 batting average in 14 conference games.  She had 22 hits in 56 at-bats and scored 12 runs.

The Garner-Hayfield-Ventura softball team had four girls named to a Top of Iowa All-Conference team.  Jayden Hughes was named to the Second Team, while Megan Oetken and Trinity Smith earned Third Team honors.  Jillian Heitland earned Honorable Mention.

Hughes, a junior, played shortstop for the Cardinals.  She led the team in runs scored with 20, had a team high 13 stolen bases and team high .377 batting average.

Under the supervision of Kathy Nelson, Donna Hess and Sally Lindsay, volunteer aids, the little bobbers were learning to swim in a fun way.  This group was in the Red Cross Swimming Class, Station +2, “Floating.”

James H. Anderson, Waynesboro, Tenn., and formerly of Clifton, Tenn., departed this life on Friday, July 6, at the Waynesboro Health and Rehab, in Waynesboro, at the age of 93 years, two months, and 20 days.

A graveside service with military rites was held on Wednesday, July 11, at Culp’s Cemetery, Waynesboro, with Tracy Love officiating.

Funeral Services will be held Monday, July 30, at 11 a.m., at the  St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, 200 S. Main St., Charles City, with family and friends visitation one hour prior to the service.
