Cards reognized on All-District teams

The Garner-Hayfield-Ventura football team was well represented on Class 2A, District 2 All-District teams.

“We had several young men make a team this year and they all deserve the recognition they received,” said Coach Scott Van Dusseldorf.

Seven players earned First Team recognition: seniors, Grady Umbarger, Chase Theobald and Conner Shaw; and juniors, Dane Whipple, Jack Van Dusseldorp, Nick Joynt and Connor Burke.

Umbarger, a linebacker, finished the season with 24 solo tackles and he had nine tackles for a loss.

The Garner-Hayfield-Ventura volleyball team wrapped up its 2016 season with an 18-10 overall record.  Four players earned post-season recognition on the Top of Iowa West All-Conference teams.

Marjorie R. Steward

Marjorie Ruth Steward, 85, of Clear Lake, died Monday, Oct. 31, 2016, at Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, in Mason City, Iowa.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 12, 2016, at The Meadows Retirement Community, 625 14th Ave. N., Clear Lake, with the Rev. Dr. Jacqueline Thompson officiating.  Inurnment will be at a later date in Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Adel, Iowa.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at The Meadows.

Betty Koop

Betty Koop, 86, passed away on Nov. 1, 2016, at her home in Altoona, Iowa.

Graveside services were held on Saturday, Nov. 5, 2016, at the Clear Lake Cemetery.

Betty was born in Estherville, Iowa, on July 8, 1930, the daughter of Leslie and Ethel Sheldon.

She enjoyed spending time with her family and solving jigsaw puzzles. She was also an avid sports fan who loved the Iowa Hawkeyes.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 9, 2016, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, 1001 9th Ave. S., Clear Lake, with the Rev. John Gossman officiating.  Burial will be in the Clear Lake Cemetery, with military honors provided by the Clear Lake VFW Post 4868.

Sally L. Kennedy, 86, of Clear Lake, died Tuesday, Nov. 1, 2016, at the Crestview Nursing and Rehabilitation, Webster City, Iowa.

Celebration of Sally’s life was held on Saturday, Nov. 5, 2016, at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, with the Rev. Dr. Pat Hall officiating of Zion Lutheran Church, Clear Lake.  Burial was in Clear Lake Cemetery.
