Vehicle jumps curb, crashes into garage

Emergency crews worked to free Vanessa Swalve from the vehicle she was driving Thursday, Nov. 12, when it crashed into a garage attached to a home at the corner of 4th Avenue South and South 9th Street.  Swalve, of Clear Lake, was driving a 2006 Chevrolet when she first hit a power pole and then a garage. She was transported by ambulance to Mercy Medical Center - North Iowa, where her condition was not made available.  The accident, reported at 11:08 a.m.

City gives go-ahead to hire design firm for veterans memorial

Former water tower site eyed, but not yet chosen

The Clear Lake City Council agreed to enter into an agreement with Clear Lake V.F.W. Post 4868 to have RDG Planning and Design, of Des Moines, provide design services for a proposed veterans memorial at the former downtown water tower site.

Council members stressed they were not approving the site, but rather supporting creation of a conceptual design which will provide a visual for the amount of space a memorial would occupy.

Clear Lake High School students and the public paid respect to veterans during a special ceremony held Wednesday, Nov. 11, at E.B. Stilman Auditorium.  The recognition included speeches by CLHS students, music, a flag presentation and keynote speech delivered by Mindy Coe, U.S. Navy retired.

School Board tables discussion of superintendent sharing until Dec. 16

The Clear Lake School Board discussed ending its superintendent sharing agreement with the Mason City School District during its regular meeting, Wednesday, Nov. 11.  Ultimately Board members decided to table a vote on the sharing agreement.

The issue will be on the agenda at the Board’s Dec. 16 meeting.

For a quarter of a century, the Giving Tree has helped to make the holidays a little brighter for Clear Lake area families.  We are pleased to report that there is already strong interest by families, businesses and other groups interested in choosing ornaments from The Giving Tree and purchasing anonymous gifts for local families.

The 26th annual Giving Tree will be displayed in the Mirror-Reporter office starting today (Wednesday, Nov. 18).
