CL girls fall short despite great effort

   Although they played some of their best ball of the season, the Clear Lake girls came up short in a pair of conference games last week. The Lions are now 10-8 overall and 10-6 in the league.  They finish out the season at home.  After hosting Webster City Tuesday (Feb. 7), they will take on Humboldt Friday and Charles City Saturday.  Tournament play begins

Lions gain conference win

The Clear Lake boys dropped a non-conference game against powerhouse Mason City last week, but then righted the ship for a conference victory over Eagle Grove Friday.  The Lions now have a record of 4-7 overall and are 4-5 in the North Central Conference.

Tough week for the Vikings

It was a tough week for the Ventura boys basketball team.  They dropped two games, one a conference tilt and the other a non-conference match-up.

The high school State Wrestling Tournament was only the first of a few post-season events which has Clear Lake High School wrestling coach Gary Weber excited about his programs’ future.

It was a good week of basketball for the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura boys, as they picked up two more wins.  The Cardinals moved their record to 15-4 overall and 10-3 in the North Iowa Conference.  G-H/V is currently tied atop the NIC with North Iowa.

A good night of shooting proved to be the Cardinals’ winning attribute on Tuesday, Jan. 29.  Hot hands by G-H/V helped them gain a 57-43 advantage over Lake Mills.

Close game with Forest City; dominate Newman  

 

Following a poorly played game against Forest City on Tuesday night, Garner-Hayfield/Ventura’s Coach Matt Erpelding predicted his team would come back on Friday and play their best game of the season.  He was right.  The Cardinals picked up an easy win over Newman Catholic.

The odds were in their favor last week, as the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura girls basketball team picked up two very close wins.

It was close contest all the way through the game, as the Cardinals topped Osage 34-32 on Tuesday, Dec. 11.

Cardinals top Warhawks in season opener

 

It may not have been a pretty victory for the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura girls basketball team, but the game did end with a win for the Cardinals over West Fork, 48-46.

“This group is a smart hardworking bunch of girls, so I have no doubt we will make great strides in the weeks to come,” said Head Coach Matt Erpelding.  “When you come out of a game like last night with a ‘W’ you have to feel good, but at the same time we must realize that you can’t repeat that type of performance on a nightly basis and expect to have a successful season.”

One team and three individuals advance to 3A State Cross County

 

Clear Lake and Garner-Hayfield/Ventura/West Hancock cross country runners are headed to the State Meet Saturday at Lakeside Municipal Golf Course in Fort Dodge.

Junior Antonio DiMarco, from Clear Lake, and sophomore Joel Toppin from G-H/V/WH qualified as individuals in the Class 3A boys race held on Monday at Spencer.  To qualify as individuals, runners need to place in the top 10.  Toppin placed seventh in the race with a time of 17:10, while DiMarco was 10th in 

17:15.   

Volleyball team splits NCC games

 

The Clear Lake girls split matches with a pair of North Central Conference teams last week, putting their record at 11-8 in match play and 4-2 in the North Central Conference.
