Nancy Knapp, 63, of Palm Springs, Calif., passed away peacefully on March 1, 2015, at Desert Regional Medical Center.

Garner woman dies in head-on collision

A Garner woman was killed when her vehicle crossed the center line and struck two other vehicles Thursday, May 21.

The Iowa State Patrol reports the accident happened on US Highway 18 shortly after 4:45 p.m.

CLHS presents diplomas to 111

One hundred-eleven members of the Clear Lake High School Class of 2015 received their diplomas Sunday, May 17.

Senior speakers Lindsay Kearns and Lauren Hewitt encouraged their classmates to dream big, but remember the lessons learned at CLHS and the guidance they received from their teachers.

“Live the life you have always imagined,” Kearns said, smiling as she revealed a Superman T-shirt under her gown.

CL police chief opening draws 24 applicants

New leader could be in place by August 1

A total of 24 persons have submitted their applications to be considered for the Clear Lake Chief of Police position.

Mayor Nelson Crabb updated the City Council on the search Monday night, saying the deadline to apply was May 15.

According to Crabb, applications were received from candidates nationwide, with 13 of the 24 applicants having recently served as chief or acting chief within their departments.  Two of the applicants come from the CLPD, he said.

Car, motorcycle crash kills woman

 A crash Saturday night killed one person and hospitalized another.

Clear Lake emergency personnel were among those responding to  a deadly crash involving a motorcycle Saturday night on Highway 122, just west of Decker Sports.

According to the Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Office, Margaret Bowe, 63, of Mason City was killed.  She was a passenger on a motorcycle driven by Todd Kephart, 54, of Mason City. The driver of the Grand Prix was 17-year-old Timothy Thompson, from Forest City.

Becker and Murray win annual Walleye Classic

The team of Jeff Becker and David Murray captured top honors in the Clear Lake Fishing Club’s annual Walleye Classic held Saturday and Sunday, May 16-17 on Clear Lake.  The local team brought in 25.33 pounds of walleye to win the $2,500 top prize.

Steve and Alex Templeton finished as runner-ups in the classic with 23.28 pounds.  Chris Scholl and Bill Miller were third with 22.16 pounds.

Jones advances to State Tennis

Clear Lake junior Sam Jones improved his record to 15-0 and advances to the Iowa Boys State Tennis Tournament for the third straight year as a District champion.

Jones went 3-0 in District play Friday, May 15, at Waverly.  He won the championship in convincing style, going 6-0, 6-0. 

“Sam continues to be consistent with his game,” said Coach Rich Peters.  “His forehand and serve have developed over the last two years.  He is hitting both with more power. “

CL and GHV compete in Regional Golf Meet

It was a cold and blustery day for a Regional Golf Meet, but the Clear Lake and Garner-Hayfield/Ventura girls put the brutal conditions behind them and gave it their all.  The Region 1B tournament was played on Monday, May 18, at Clarmond Country Club in Clarion.

Clarion-Goldfield/Dows won the meet with a score of 368.  GHV followed with a 391 and Clear Lake was third, carding a 433.  CGD and GHV will advance to play in the Regional Final Golf Meet in Pocahontas on Tuesday, May 26.
