Cardinals fall to tough competition

It was a rough week for the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura boys soccer team.  The Cardinals dropped two games to tough competition.

It was a young, inexperienced Garner-Hayfield/Ventura boys soccer team that took the field last week against a good Webster City team.

CL golf team advances to Districts

The Clear Lake Boys Golf Team traveled to Decorah Friday, looking to advance through Sectionals and earn a berth to the District golf meet this Friday at Wavlery.  The team got off to a great start the first nine holes, leading by five strokes over Decorah heading to the back nine.  The Lions played steady the back nine, but struggled to take advantage of good opportunities and were edged by two strokes.   

Decorah claimed the Sectional title with a 309 total score.  The Lions advanced by finishing second with a 311 for the 18-hole Sectional tournament. 

GHV boys end golf season

The Garner-Hayfield/Ventura boys golf team can look back at the 2015 season with no regrets.

NIC Conference Meet

It was a disappointing night for the GHV boys golf team.  They fell just three strokes short of winning the North Iowa Conference Tournament held on Monday, May 11.

Bishop Garrigan won the 12-team meet with a score of 331.  Eagle Grove was runners-up with 334 and GHV scored 335.

Season ends for CL tennis team

 

 

Team competition came to an end for the Clear Lake girls tennis team Saturday, May 16, in Regional competition at the Wartburg College indoor facilities in Waverly.  The Lions will, however, participate in the Individual Regionals Thursday, May 21, in Decorah.

Due to a forfeit by Hampton-Dumont, Clear Lake moved to the second round of Regional competition and met host Waverly-Shell Rock.   The Go-Hawks shutout the Lions, 5-0.

CL girls track team not at full strength for NCC Meet

Coach Shawn Puttmann said his team was not at full strength at the North Central Conference meet held on Monday, May 11, in Fort Dodge and it showed in the final standings.  The team was without leading sprinter McKenna Backhaus, who was out with an injury.   Typically the Lions have topped at least three of the NCC teams which finished ahead of them May 11.  At Fort Dodge, they were only able to score 43 points and finished last in the eight-team field.

Lions finish fourth at NCC track meet

The Clear Lake boys track team finished fourth in a highly competitive North Central Conference track meet held Monday, May 11, at Iowa Falls.  Algona won the title with 177 points ad Humboldt was runner-up with 106.  Webster City came in third with 96, followed by the Lions with 85 points, Iowa Falls-Alden with 81 and St. Ed’s with 71 points.  Clarion-Goldfield and Hampton-Dumont finished with 49 and 36 points respectively.

Marlys Trettin

Marlys “Molly” L. Trettin, 81, of Mason City, Iowa, formerly of Clear Lake, died Thursday, May 14, 2015, at home. Funeral services were held on Tuesday, May 19, 2015, at Faith Baptist Church, 1807 S. Kentucky Avenue, with the Rev. David Callison and Rev. Greg Gosnell officiating.  Interment was in Memorial Park Cemetery.  Memorials may be directed to Faith Baptist Church or Iowa Regular Baptist Camp. Online condolences may be left for the family at www.majorericksonfuneralhome.com

Robert Brookins

Robert Charles Brookins, 89, of Clear Lake, died Monday, May 11, 2015, at Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, in Mason City, Iowa.

A memorial service was held on Saturday, May 16, 2015, at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, with Pastor David Byrd officiating.  Military honors were provided by the Clear Lake Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4868.  A private family inurnment will be at a later date.

Family suggest memorial contributions be made to Hospice of North Iowa.

Linda Ziemer

Linda Mae Ziemer, 71, of Clear Lake, died Saturday, May 16, 2015, in Story City, Iowa.  The funeral service will be held Wednesday, May 20, at 1 p.m., at the Clear Lake Church of Christ, with Pastor Brad Sheldon officiating.

  Linda was born on Sept. 7, 1943, in Mason City, Iowa, to Harvey E. and Opal Irene (Utter) Schultz.  She graduated from Mason City High School in 1961, and then attended the Minnesota Bible College.  Linda married LeRoy L. Ziemer on Dec.14, 1963. 

Hattie Butenhoff

A memorial service for Hattie Butenhoff, who passed away Feb. 12, 2015, will be held at the Evangelical Free Church, 1310 Highway 18 West, Clear Lake, at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 23, 2015.  

It will be a celebration of her life and her love of God and her family and friends.
