Cardinal soccer girls fall to A-P, 7-0

Looks can be deceiving.  Despite a 7-0 loss to Aplington Parkersburg on Thursday, May 7, the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura girls soccer team had some positive aspects come out of the game.

“A-P is just that good that it looked like we had a bad game.  But I am not disappointed with the loss, because we had some positives too,” said Coach Josh Banse.

GHV boys wins home meet

The Garner-Hayfield/Ventura boys track team had a week of ups and downs.  After placing first at their home track meet, the Cardinals finished third in the Adam Sundall Relays held at Bishop Garrigan.

GHV Meet

It was a fun victory lap for the GHV boys track team.  They circled their home oval after winning the 2015 Don Hoppel Co-ed Relays on Monday, May 4.  GHV took top honors in the nine-team field with 122 points, followed by Clear Lake with 105.  Forest City was third with 90 points.

CL girls take third at NCC golf meet

The Clear Lake girls shot a season-low score, but it wasn’t enough to win the North Central Conference Tournament title this year.  The Lions were third in the team race behind Clarion-Goldfield-Dows and Humboldt, which each fired a 391.  C-G- won the tiebreaker with a fifth score of 108.  The tournament was played at Veteran’s Memorial in Clear Lake.

Tennis girls finish second

The Clear Lake girls tennis team finished second at the Waverly Quad held at Wartburg College Thursday, May 7.  The Lions defeated Aplington-Parkersburg and Waterloo East.  Their only loss of the night was to Waverly.  

Kylie Bottjen, playing in number two singles matches, went 3-0 on the day.  Number one player Kirsten Jordan went 1-2, with one of her losses coming to a state qualifier, 4-10.

CL boys tennis team way too much for the Bulldogs

The Clear Lake boys were too much for Hampton-Dumont in a tennis match played Thursday, May 7, in Hampton.  The Lions prevailed, 8-1.

DeVries named new head football coach

Jared DeVries, an Iowa high school football standout who went on to become a college All-American and played professional football, has been named as the next head coach for Clear Lake High School.

Two more wins for CL boys soccer team

The Clear Lake boys tacked on two more wins on the soccer field last week.

CL 6, Humboldt 2

The Lions traveled to Humboldt Monday, April 27, and posted a 6-2 victory.

Lions win home meet

The Clear Lake boys hosted their first home meet of the year at Veteran’s Memorial Golf Course Friday, May 1.  The Lions dominated Algona and Iowa Falls-Alden to win.

“It’s too bad it took until now to play at home so we’re glad to play here,” said Coach Eric Perry.  His team fired a 152 to top Algona by 20 strokes.  IF-A was third with 183.  

Snelling earns medalist honors in four meets

Clear Lake’s Emily Snelling, ranked number one (3A) by the Iowa High School Golf Coaches Association, earned medalist honors in all four of the Lions’ outings last week.  The team continues to gain confidence and valuable experience as the post-season approaches.

New Hampton Tournament

GHV girls soccer team peaking at right time

The Garner-Hayfield/Ventura girls soccer team is peaking at the right time of the season.  The Cardinals picked up two wins and finished as runner-ups at the GHV Tournament held on Saturday.

GHV 10, CAL/H-D/B-K

The Cardinals had 26 shots on goal on their way to a shut-out over CAL/H-D/B-K, 10-0, on Monday, April 27.
