Marvin Lunbeck

Marvin H. Lunbeck, 92, of Clear Lake, passed away peacefully after a brief illness Monday, May 18, 2015, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City, Iowa.

Memorial service to celebrate his life will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, May 21, 2015, with the Rev. Ed Bard Chaplin, of Hospice of North Iowa officiating.  Military honors will be provided by the Clear Lake V.F.W.  Burial will take place at a later time in the Clear Lake Cemetery.  Family suggests memorials to Marvin H. Lunbeck memorial fund.

Richard Tarr

Richard “Dick” Tarr, 75, of Champaign, Ill., passed away at Bo Wood Campground, in Sullivan, Ill., on Monday, May 26, 2014.  Please join his family for a one year memorial service being held at the Clear Lake Cemetery on Saturday, May 23, 2015 at 11 a.m., where his cremated remains will be laid to rest.  Following the ceremony, family and friends are welcome to celebrate his life at a luncheon located at the home of William and Pat Tarr, 19738

Tree 1, car 0

David Phalen, of Clear Lake, was lucky to not be injured when his vehicle collided with a tree on N. 10th St. about 3:15 p.m. Friday, May 5.  According to a Clear Lake Police

Department report, Phalen’s vehicle hit the curb at an alley entrance, then hit a large maple tree and flipped on its side.  Phalen was able to get out of the vehicle himself before emergency crews arrived.  He refused the offer to be transported for medical help.

School Board nears agreement with teachers

Groups expected to  settle on 3.55 percent increase in package 

The Clear School District and Clear Lake Education Association are expected to settle on an agreement which will provide teachers with a 3.55 total wage and benefit package increase for the 2015-16 school year.

The Board of Education approved a tentative agreement Monday night.  The CLEA is expected to vote on the contract this week.

Economic Corridor leader urges city to expand development areas

The Clear Lake City Council is being encouraged to make expansion of its industrial park a priority.

Chad Schreck, president and CEO of the North Iowa Corridor Economic Development Corporation, told the City Council last week recent activity has created a shortage of potential sites for new and expanding business and industry.

Clear Lake named as Small Business Community of the Year finalist

Clear Lake was among 10 statewide finalists  for the Iowa Small Business Administration’s (SBA’s) Small Business Community of the Year.  Announcement of the finalists is part of the SBA’s National Small Business Week events.

Clear Lake’s nomination for the honor was made by the North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) John Pappajohn Entrepreneurial Center and its North Iowa Small Business Development Center (SBDC).  The entity also 

nominated Floyd County, including Charles City, and it was also made a finalist for the honor.

Sylvan Tosel

Sylvan Tosel, 93, of Mason City, Iowa, passed away Friday, May 1, 2015, at Mayo Clinic Hospital, St. Mary’s Campus, Rochester, Minn.

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, May 6, 2015, at Hogan Bremer Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 3rd Street N.E., Mason City, with Pastor Kevin Jones officiating.  Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

  Memorial contributions may be directed to Trinity Lutheran Church.

Karen Clark

Karen Clark, 76, of Mason City,  Iowa, passed away May 11, 2015, at Hospice of North Iowa, Mason City.

A Catholic service will be at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, May 14, 2015, at Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 3rd Street N.E., Mason City, with the Rev. Kenneth B. Gehling officiating.  Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Rockwell.

Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. on Wednesday, May 13, 2015, at Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel.

Memorial contributions may be directed to Hospice of North Iowa.

Thomas Richards

Thomas C. Richards, 67, of Clear Lake, died Sunday, April 19, 2015, at St. Mary’s Hospital, Rochester, Minn.

  Family will greet friends from 5-7 p.m., on Friday, May 15, 2015, at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake. A private service for family to celebrate Tom’s life will be held on Saturday, May 16, at the Guardian Angel Roadside Chapel, Clear Lake. 

Dustin Spilman

Dustin Lee Spilman was born May 28, 1983, the son of Randy and Becky (Wilder) Spilman.

When he was small, he had a head that was disproportionately larger than the rest of his body, earning him the family nickname “Jughead,” however he grew into it and became a large, gentle, quiet, thoughtful man with a gift for making friends and making people laugh.
