Eugene “Gene” Merlin Bachman, 84, of Clear Lake, died Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2017, at Good Shepherd Health Center, in Mason City, Iowa.

Funeral services were held on Friday, Sept. 15, 2017, at Clear Lake United Methodist Church, Clear Lake, with Pastor David Peterson officiating.  Burial was in Ell Township Cemetery, in Klemme, Iowa.

The Clear Lake City Council voted 4-1 Monday night in favor of establishing an ordinance that will ban smoking, along with all tobacco and nicotine products from City Parks, the beach and additional public outdoor spaces.

At-large Councilman Gary Hugi cast the lone dissenting vote, saying he did not agree with banning smokeless tobacco.  Hugi said he recognizes the benefit of smoke-free spaces, but felt the ordinance goes too far in banning tobacco products without second hand health hazards.

Tony Nelson, City Council Representative for the Second Ward, has announced he will seek re-election to a third term.

Gretchen Jones and Zach Lester were crowned as Clear Lake High School’s 2017 Homecoming Queen and King during a coronation ceremony Friday.  The pair then led a parade of high school classes, teams, coaches and the high school band to City Park for a community pep rally.  -Reporter photo by Chris Barragy.
