City, school consider wellness center

The Clear Lake School District and City are considering construction of a community health and wellness center.

Although no firm plans have been developed, school and city leaders say they believe the time is right to work together to create a community asset which will provide residents with recreational activities year-round.

Prier: Life lessons are taught through music

Editor’s Note: When the new school year begins this week, Holly Prier will be at the podium ready to lead the Clear Lake High School instrumental music program. An article written by Angie Hagerty for Iowa State University’s Script & Score magazine, discusses Prier’s own high school band experience, her rise to become drum major at ISU, and life lessons she hopes to teach with music.  The following features excerpts from Hagerty’s original story, as well as comments Prier shared upon her arrival in Clear Lake.

It looks like they are playing some new video game, but members of the Clear Lake Volunteer Fire Department were all business last week as they trained to operate a new remotely operated vehicle which will be used for search and rescue operations.

Connie M. Barlow, 78, of Tempe, Az., departed this life on Wednesday, Aug. 14, 2019, at her home.

No services were held.

Connie was born on Jan. 4, 1940, in Clear Lake, to the late Pansy B. Jones, of Clear Lake.

On Sept. 9, 1958, she married Kaye Barlow and to this union five were born, Roxeanne K. Barlow, Arizona, Verne W. (Angie) Barlow, Texas, Annette S. Privilla, Arizona, Russel D. Barlow, Missouri, Allen J. (Lisa) Barlow, Kentucky.

Karen A. Sprenger

Karen Ann (Gray) Sprenger, 79, died Friday, Aug. 16, 2019, at Oakwood Care Center, in Clear Lake.

  A memorial service will be held on Friday, Aug. 23, 2019, at 5:30 p.m. at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. 4th St., Clear Lake.  Visitation is one hour prior at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel.
