Lauren Lee Maertens

An Angel on Earth has gone to be with her Grandpa’s Bill and Bill. Lauren Lee Maertens, 31, of Clear Lake, passed away on Monday, March 14, 2016, at her home at the Opportunity Village main campus.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, March 17, 2016, at Trinity Lutheran Church, 213 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City, Iowa, with the Reverands Kathy Graves and Rich Murray officiating.  Burial will be in Park Cemetery, Nora Springs, Iowa.

Wilma Jean (Hodenfield) Trebil, 93, of Manly, died Monday, March 7, 2016, at the Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning, S.C.  A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, March 11 at the Bethel United Methodist Church, Manly.  Visitation will be held from 5 - 7 p.m. on Thursday at the Bride Colonial Chapel, Manly and also one hour prior to service time on Friday at the church.

Clear Lake girls earn post-season honors

Post-season honors are plentiful for members of the Clear Lake girls basketball team.

In addition to being a unanimous First Team All-North Central Conference pick, junior Emily Snelling was named to the Class 3A Northwest Regional team, All-District Team and was a Third Team All-State selection.

Battle of the Badges aids Make-A-Wish

The 6th Annual Battle of the Badges was held on Friday, Feb. 19, in Mason City.  The hockey match is played yearly for Make-A-Wish, with law enforcement vs. firefighters and EMS personnel.

The event began with a ceremonial puck drop with several local “Wish Kids” and an honor guard presentation.

Lau earns conference recognition

Garner-Hayfield-Ventura junior Hannah Lau earned Honorable Mention recognition in the All-Conference roster for the TIC West Division.

In league action, Lau was 11th in scoring with a 13.8 points per game average.  She was third overall in field goal percentage.  Lau was also a top rebounder, finishing third overall in the league with 138 rebounds.  She was also third in blocked shots with 16 for the season.
