Fourth ranked Lions record three shut-outs

 The Clear Lake baseball team had an amazing week, winning three games by shut-out, topping Class 4A powers and leveling a school with a storied baseball tradition. The Lions are 8-1 and ranked fourth in Class 3A.

CL boys tennis team just shy of a trip to State

The Clear Lake boys tennis team wrapped up their 2014 season with a strong finish, but just missed a trip to the State Meet. The Lions competed in the Boys Substate Semi-finals at Fort Dodge Saturday, May 24.
 Clear Lake opened the competition with a 5-1 victory over LeMars, but were downed by St. Ed’s in the Substate finals by the same score.

CL girls tennis team competes at Team Regionals

The Clear Lake girls tennis team concluded team play for the season at the Team Regionals held in Waverly Saturday, May 17.  The Lions won their first round match-up against Grundy Center, but bowed out to host Waverly-Shell Rock in round two.

“Everyone stepped up today.  It’s been a lot of fun to see the team do so well this year,” said Coach Mary Jo Peterson.  The Clear Lake team has a record of 7-3.  The Lions were slated to play one dual makeup match Tuesday, May 20, against Webster City.

CL girls top St. Edmond at home golf meet

On Friday, May 2, the Clear Lake girls golf team hosted St. Edmond at Veterans Memorial Golf Club.  Clear Lake shot 177 and St. Ed’s 211. 

Clear Lake’s Emily Snelling claimed medalist honors with a 37.  Other counting scores for the Lions included 46s from Maddie Hess and Erin Gates, and a 48 from Paige Backhaus.

GHV boys golf tops West Fork

West Fork Meet

 GHV traveled to Sheffield on Tuesday, April 22, to face West Fork at Ridge Stone Golf Course. The Cardinals topped the Warhawks with a team score of 170.
 Senior Jacob Heinemann had his best round of the season, shooting an excellent even par 36.
 “This is one of the best rounds of the season in this part of the state,” said Coach Ken Krause.

 Ryan Grunwald turned in his best round of the season, shooting a solid 43. Braeden Johnston added a 45 and Matt Schroeder completed the scoring with a 46.

GHV girls track team places third at opening meet

 

It was a beautiful night for a track meet on Friday, April 11, when the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura girls track team competed in the Bishop Garrigan meet.

The team placed third with 96 points.  Algona won the meet with 188 points and Bishop Garrigan was second with 106 points.  Other teams competing included West Hancock, Forest City and Clear Lake.

Fischer receives IHSAA Media Award

Bob Fischer, news director for Three Eagles Radio in Mason City,  recently received the IHSAA Media Award.

Fischer is a familiar voice to audiences in North Central Iowa.  He has been the voice of Clear Lake athletics, as well as other area high schools and college teams.  He has been the news director at Three Eagles Radio since 2000.  

Last second shot ends perfect season

The Clear Lake boys survived a pair of close games to end the regular conference season undefeated, but then had their perfect regular season disrupted by a last second shot.

Cardinals rack up three more wins

Three more huge wins for the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura girls basketball team brought them closer to the goal of being North Iowa Conference champions.

It was a big win for GHV on Tuesday, Jan. 28, when the Cardinals hosted Osage.

Clear Lake girls take lead in the NCC

Coach Bart Smith knew his fourth ranked Lions (3A) were ready to be tested.  And they passed with flying colors last week, recording a pair of North Central Conference and a non-conference win.  The victory over St.
