  William G. “Bill” Short, 83, of Garner, Iowa, died Saturday, Nov. 11, 2017 at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, in Mason City, Iowa.

  Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 18, at Faith Lutheran Church, in Miller, Iowa, with Rose Visser, lay minister officiating.  Inurnment will be at Ellington Township Cemetery with military rites by the Garner Veterans Ceremonial Unit.

Douglas James Southwick, 59, of Clear Lake, passed away peacefully on Monday, Nov. 13, 2017, at his home.

Arrangements are pending at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake.

(Above) Serving in 1917 - These men spent the summer of 1917 quartered in the armory at Mason City.  They ate army mess there and drilled daily at the outskirts of the city.  Several of them left for France in September 1918.  Sitting is Carl Nielsen, the cook.  Front row (L-R): Axel Rasmussen, Shorty Long, Johnny Hayden, Chuck Rickard, Roy Hodnefield and Chuck Morse.

Incumbents voted off Clear Lake Council One newcomer in Ventura

Both incumbents seeking re-election to the Clear Lake City Council were ousted in the Tuesday, Nov. 7, Regular Election.

Newcomer Bennett Smith topped two-term Councilman Tony Nelson, as well as challenger Ben Smith to win the Second Ward Council seat.  The winner captured 48 percent of the votes, finishing with 184, compared to 147 votes for Nelson and 51 for Ben Smith.  Nelson was running for a third term on the Council.

The public was invited to attend Veteran’s Day ceremonies at Clear Lake High School Friday.   (Above) Angel Medellin, a 2017 CLHS graduate, sent a video-taped message to share with students during the program.  Medellin, who moved to Clear Lake at a young age after losing his parents at age two, enlisted in the United States Navy following high school graduation.

Are you in the holiday spirit yet?

One of the community’s most recognizable symbols of the season is ready.  The 28th annual Giving Tree is now on display in the Mirror-Reporter office at 12 N. 4th St.

For a quarter of a century, the Giving Tree has helped to make the holidays a little brighter for Clear Lake area families.

Sign-up forms for the Giving Tree were distributed in the Clear Lake School District and sent home with those attending Head Start and Lake Town Charlie Brown.
