Local Earth Day rooted in lake water quality awareness

Earth Day has become such a standard celebration in Clear Lake, it’s hard to believe it has been 20 years since a small group of volunteers first organized an event as a way of addressing our lake water quality.

McIntire headed to National Golden Gloves tourney

Brian McIntire simply loves to compete.

He’s been everything from a high school standout athlete to a  First Team college football All-American.  After that it was arena football for six years, helping the Sioux Falls Storm win four championships.  But when a serious knee injury sidelined him in 2011, it was time to retire.

‘Sentinel’ will watch over Central Gardens

Jim and Ann Kuhlman celebrated a special anniversary with a gift to a place they love.

The Mason City couple met in the spring of 1967 and were married later that year.  They marked their 50th year by purchasing and donating a sculpture to Central Gardens of North Iowa.

Board approves raise in Clear Lake school tax rate

Residents of the Clear Lake School District will see the school’s portion of their tax bill rise 80-cents.  The School Board passed its 2017-18 budget unanimously at its April 12 meeting.

Under the budget the district’s tax rate will go from $9.59 in 2016-17 to $10.39 per $1,000 of assessed property valuation.

Richard Allan Wilcox, 65, of Mason City, Iowa, died Sunday, April 23, 2017, at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.In accordance with Rich’s last wishes, his body has been cremated and no services are scheduled at this time.  He asked that he be remembered as he was in life.

Family suggests memorial contributions to the Richard Wilcox Memorial Fund.

Donnabelle M. Axelson

Donnabelle May (Savage) (Conroy) Axelsen, Clear Lake, 93, died Wednesday, April 19, 2017, at the Muse Norris Inpatient Unit, Hospice of North Iowa, in Mason City, Iowa.

According to her wishes, there will be no service. A family gathering will be held at a later date.  Memorials in Donnabelle’s memory may be given to the Elliott Burgos Fund, c/o Chuck Conroy, 507 18th St. W., Clear Lake, IA 50428.
