CL boys tennis team moves record to 5-2

The Clear Lake boys tennis team sandwiched two wins around a loss last week, putting their record at 5-2.

The Lions began the week at Webster City and stung the Lynx 9-0 on Monday, April 17.  That match was followed by a trip to Boone, where the undefeated Toreadors won 7-2.

“Boone is undefeated (7-0) on the year.  They have won 27 straight regular season matches,” explained Coach Rich Peters.  “We had three matches that were very close that we were unable to win.”

The Garner-Hayfield-Ventura girls soccer team traveled to Iowa Falls on Monday, April 17. A talented Cadet team handed the Cardinals a 2-0 loss.  Last season IF-A was 4-0 and they returned four of their top five players.

“I thought we played well again,” said Coach Josh Banse.  “Gains are being made every day in practice and in games.”

It was a full week of golf for the Garner-Hayfield-Ventura boys golf team, as they competed in four meets.

On Monday, April 17, the squad competed at Rice Lake.  The Cardinals won the meet with a 172.  Forest City was only two strokes behind with a 174 and Lake Mills ended with a 207.

The Garner-Hayfield-Ventura boys finished near the bottom of a nine-team field at the HD Boy’s Invite held on Monday, April 17, held at Hampton-Dumont.

A majority of the teams’ points came from a one-two finish by Ray Cataldo and Logan Dalbeck in the 3200 meter run.  Cataldo won with a time of 10:38.96 and Dalbeck finished in 10:45.68.

HD Boy’s Invite

Lake Mills Meet

Despite playing on an unfamiliar course, the Garner-Hayfield-Ventura girls golf team recorded the lowest score on Monday, April 17, when they competed in a triangular meet at Lake Mills.  GHV captured the win with a 192.  Forest City was runner-up with a 229 and Lake Mills finished with a 238.

Bailee Frayne was named the medalist with a 41.  Carlee Frayne was the runner-up with a 43.  Rounding out the score was Rachel Enright with a 52, Kayla Leerar shot a 56 and Paige Penning recorded a 60.

Local Earth Day rooted in lake water quality awareness

Earth Day has become such a standard celebration in Clear Lake, it’s hard to believe it has been 20 years since a small group of volunteers first organized an event as a way of addressing our lake water quality.
