Clear Lake girls tennis team opens strong; defeats St. Edmond, 8-1

The Clear Lake girls tennis team opened the season March 31 with a resounding 8-1 victory over St. Edmond.

Number one and two singles players Gretchen Jones and Kiersten Baalson got the Lions off to a good start with wins.  Jones, a junior, defeated Haley Ledford, 8-3, while Baalson easily topped Leah Hughes, 8-1.

Sophomore Maranda Harrison fell to Madison Tarbox in the number three singles match, 8-3.

IGCA Senior All Star team

Clear Lake High School’s Emily Snelling was selected as a member of the Iowa Girls Coaches Association Senior All Star Team.  Snelling was unable to play with her 3A, 4A, 5A Select Team due to an injury, but she attended the games Saturday, April 1, at Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids.  Only four other girls from Class 3A were selected to play on the Select Team.  Her team won 101- 73.

Janice K. Bowman

Janice Kay Bowman, 79, of Des Moines, Iowa, passed away on Feb. 28, 2017, from complications of Alzheimer’s disease.

The body will be cremated and a celebration of life will be held in Clear Lake, on Sunday, April 9, in the Cypress Lounge of the Surf Ballroom, from 1-4 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Animal Rescue League of Iowa, Inc. or the Alzheimer’s Association.

Janice K. Bowman

Janice Kay Bowman, 79, of Des Moines, Iowa, passed away on Feb. 28, 2017, from complications of Alzheimer’s disease.

The body will be cremated and a celebration of life will be held in Clear Lake, on Sunday, April 9, in the Cypress Lounge of the Surf Ballroom, from 1-4 p.m.

Melinda “Mindy” K. Kavars, 54, of Mason City, Iowa, died Thursday, Nov. 17, 2016, in Mason City.

A Trisagion Service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, April 8, 2017, at Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, in Mason City, with Fr. Joseph Mirowski officiating.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, family suggests memorial contributions to the Crisis Intervention Center in Mason City.

Margaret “Dutch” Gayle Bieber, 95, of Ventura, died Tuesday, March 28, 2017, at Heritage Care and Rehabilitation Center, in Mason City, Iowa.

Per Dutch’s wishes, her body has been cremated and an inurnment will be in Ventura Cemetery at a later date.

Dutch was born Nov. 18, 1921, the daughter of Lee and Ilo (Davis) Kinsella in Henning, Minn.  She married Phillip Bieber, Jr. on Jan. 1, 1941, in Ventura.  He preceded her in death on Jan. 13, 2003.
