John Edward Guhl, 77, of Clear Lake, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Tuesday, April 12, 2016, at the Mercy Medical Center North Iowa, Mason City, Iowa.

A celebration of John’s life was held on Friday, April 15, 2016, at Zion Lutheran Church, Clear Lake, with the Rev. Steve Bang officiating.  Inurnment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.

Karmen Kay McPherren (Mathews), 62, of Clear Lake, died Saturday, April 16, 2016, at the Oakwood Care Center.

A closed service will be held near Thornton, Iowa on Saturday, April 23.  A celebration of life gathering will follow from 5-8 p.m., in the Veranda Room, at the Best Western, in Clear Lake.  All that knew and loved Karmen are encouraged to attend.

Aaron Donaldson remembers visiting his aunt in Clear Lake each summer and doing three things: Going to eat at The Ritz, getting a treat at the Bakery, and going to a movie at the Lake Theater.

Two of those options aren’t possible anymore— Donaldson is determined the third will remain.

Personalized bricks could be impacted by design choice

The Clear Lake City Council tabled a decision Monday night about the look and materials for new sidewalks on Main Avenue downtown.  Four of the five Council members said they needed more information about what might become of personalized brick pavers which were purchased through the Chamber of Commerce if they chose not to re-use the pavers in the new design.

Work resumes on 12th Avenue South

Crews from PCI resumed work on the 12th Avenue South bridge this week.  According to Public Works Director Joe Weigel, rock base was being prepared in order for Wicks Construction to pave this week, weather permitting.  The bridge, which leads the way to the new McKesson plant from the west, was closed through the winter months.  Completion date for the project is May 30.-Reporter photo.

Ventura woman charged with theft from cancer charity

A Ventura woman is accused of stealing from a cancer charity.

Leanne Renee Hicks, 51, of Ventura, was booked into Cerro Gordo County Jail Friday, April 15 on charges of ongoing criminal conduct and second-degree theft.

Authorities allege that between June 14, 2014, and Jan. 4, 2016, Hicks repeatedly misappropriated funds from “Buddies for Boobies” while she served as president of the nonprofit organization.  Hicks allegedly stole more than $1,000 but less than $10,000.
