School Board will narrow field of superintendent candidates for March interviews

The Clear Lake School Board will meet in closed session Monday, Feb. 29, to select three to five finalists for the position of district superintendent.  According to School Board President Chyrl Bergvig, the district received 40 inquiries and 20 fully completed applications for the position.

The Clear Lake School Board has approved the district’s 2016-17 school calendar.

The school year will largely follow the same schedule as the current school year, with classes beginning Wednesday, Aug. 24, and concluding  May 26.

The district will continue to have weekly early dismissals (2 p.m. Wednesdays) to accommodate teacher professional development sessions.

Lions moving on

The regular season ended with a pair of losses for the Clear Lake boys.  Webster City and Algona put the Lions’ season record at 10-11 overall.  The team finished the regular season with an 8-7 record in the North Central Conference, good for fourth place.  Webster City led the way with a 12-1 NCC mark.  They were followed by Algona (11-2) and St. Ed’s (11-3).

Area wrestlers advance to State

Clear Lake and Garner-Hayfield-Ventura High Schools will each be represented by two wrestlers at the State Meet, which begins Thursday, Feb. 18, at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.   The first round for Class 2A wrestlers begins at 6 p.m. Thursday. Action continues Friday with sessions at 2:30 and 8:45 p.m.  Saturday wrestling is slated at 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.

Cardinals primed for post-season

The Garner-Hayfield-Ventura boys finished the regular season with a win over Eagle Grove.  The team ended the regular season by finishing second in the Top of Iowa West Division Conference with a record of 14-2.  West Hancock was the conference leader with a record of 15-1.
